Park Forest, Illinois (WLS) — After a valiant battle spanning nearly ten years following a tragic shooting, Park Forest Police Detective Tim Jones has passed away. This weekend, the community is set to gather in his memory.

Detective Jones, who was just 24 at the time, sustained a life-altering head injury in March 2016 while on duty responding to a burglary incident.

To commemorate his life, a special service will take place on Saturday at Tinley Park High School, the institution from which he graduated.

The event will feature a public walk-through from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by a dedicated walk-through for first responders from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

The formal celebration of life service is scheduled to commence at 2 p.m.

Jones was shot and paralyzed after working for the Park Forest police department for less than a year.

It was the first time a Park Forest officer had been shot in the line of duty in over 20 years, officials said.

“Tim will always be an inspiration and a reminder of the power of strength, faith, and the unwavering support of family and loved ones,” the Park Forest Police Department said in a statement. “While our hearts are broken, we remain incredibly proud of the fight he gave.”
