how a little-known virus became a global outbreak

A recent hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship has catapulted this obscure virus into the global spotlight, prompting a swift response from health officials worldwide. The director of the World Health Organization arrived in Spain on Sunday, as the vessel neared the Canary Islands, to coordinate efforts in containing the situation.

This outbreak has been linked to the same rare virus that claimed the life of Gene Hackman’s wife, Betsy Arakawa, in New Mexico last year. However, the cruise ship hosts a particular variant known as the Andes virus, which has the alarming capability of human-to-human transmission.

On May 6, epidemiologists boarded the boat in Cape Verde, before it set sail for the Canary Islands. AP

The chain of events was set in motion on November 27, when Dutch ornithologists Leo and Mirjam Schilperoord embarked on an extended expedition across South America. Their travels took them through Chile, Uruguay, and eventually back to Argentina by late March.

It is believed that during their visit to a landfill in Ushuaia, Argentina, the couple inhaled particles from the feces of long-tailed pygmy rice rats, carriers of the virus, while they were observing the elusive Darwin’s caracara bird.

This series of events has led to the current crisis, as authorities work tirelessly to manage the spread and impact of the outbreak.
