Fever star Kelsey Mitchell turns on Caitlin Clark's fans

Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell indicated that she will put her own priorities first when deciding where to continue her career, appearing to take a pointed swipe at parts of the team’s fanbase.

Indiana’s season ended abruptly Thursday night, with the Fever falling to the Las Vegas Aces in Game 3 of their opening-round WNBA playoff series.

With the Fever’s 2026 campaign now over, Mitchell is heading into unrestricted free agency after producing the finest season of her career.

Fever general manager Amber Cox and head coach Stephanie White both said Saturday that keeping Mitchell in Indiana is a major priority. The four-time All-Star, however, made clear that retaining her could prove complicated.

Mitchell repeatedly stressed that she must be “selfish” during free-agency negotiations, with the intense scrutiny surrounding Caitlin Clark and the Fever fanbase seemingly among the issues she will weigh.

“I have to be selfish,” Mitchell said during her end-of-season media availability Saturday. “I think that’s where I am in my career … figuring out what I need and what is best for me. So I have to be selfish in that room.”

“Being part of the Fever and an organization that comes with a lot of ups and downs, what matters to me is having strong chemistry both on and off the court,” Mitchell continued. “I’ve spent my entire career with one team, so I’m still trying to figure all of this out. It’s hard, man.”

She later added: “There’s a lot to sort through. As I get older, I have to be more deliberate about where my career is going and what matters most to me, whether that’s winning or individual success. I worked my tail off to get here, so whatever decision I make will come from a selfish standpoint. I’ll be honest about that.”

Mitchell’s remarkable season saw her set WNBA single-season records for total points and three-pointers made.

Her backcourt partnership with Clark became one of the driving forces behind Indiana’s progress throughout the season.

Although Mitchell acknowledged that playing alongside Clark will factor heavily into her decision, she also suggested that the behavior of some Clark supporters could influence whether she returns to Indiana.

“Showing up every day and competing for fans who may or may not like you is difficult,” Mitchell said. “I think this organization is unbelievable, but when it comes to truly being yourself, it hasn’t always been easy.”

“I don’t think people understand how much we deal with,” she added. “If I showed you my direct messages and all the hate that comes with being a professional athlete — and especially an Indiana Fever player — you’d see how much goes into it. Some of those days are incredibly difficult.”

“Playing with Clark, and having all the attention that follows her, means we receive a lot of criticism simply because we are her teammates.”

The Fever have been at the center of the WNBA conversation throughout the season, forcing the players to navigate constant attention and controversy away from the court.

Several hard fouls involving Clark sparked outrage among fans, many of whom believed officials failed to make key calls involving the young star. The incidents prompted repeated criticism of the league from supporters who felt it was not doing enough to protect its biggest attraction.

Sophie Cunningham also generated widespread debate after speaking about “protecting young girls” in sports, comments that drew the WNBA into a broader controversy over transgender athletes.

Most recently, the Fever’s fans were back in the spotlight after Aces star A’ja Wilson was caught in a heated exchange with one during Game 2.

Wilson was seen storming towards a fan who was seated in the second row, pointing at him and shouting, ‘You don’t point at me,’ towards him during the fourth quarter of the game.
