What was meant to be an adrenaline-filled outing ended in tragedy for a 21-year-old woman in Brazil after a fatal bungee jumping accident.
Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas had shared a lighthearted message on Instagram just before the jump on Saturday, writing, “Who was the crazy person who let me jump off a bridge???” as she prepared for the experience in Limeira, in the state of São Paulo.
According to O Globo, the outing turned deadly when staff with the bungee company allegedly launched her from the “Skeleton Bridge” without securing the cord to her harness.
Video circulated on social media reportedly shows the horrifying moment de Freitas was pushed from the edge without the bungee line attached. In the footage, a witness can be heard yelling, “Guys, the rope!” while pointing to the safety cord still on the ground, the outlet reported.
De Freitas, who was studying physical education and sports management, fell about 130 feet and was pronounced dead at the scene.
