California Gov. Gavin Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom reported more than $1 million in taxable income in each year from 2021 through 2024, according to copies of their federal tax returns.
The documents mark the first tax filings Newsom’s office has made public since his 2022 reelection. Their release also comes only weeks after the Democratic governor, one of Donald Trump’s most prominent critics, said he and his wife are under an active Justice Department investigation.
Newsom has denounced the inquiry as “politically motivated,” arguing it is an attempt by the Trump administration to derail speculation around a possible 2028 presidential campaign.
“Donald Trump isn’t just coming after me because of my mean tweets,” Newsom said in a video posted on social media.
“He’s coming after me because I am considering running for president.”
The scope and specifics of the investigation have not been fully disclosed, though it is believed to have been prompted in part by whistleblower complaints tied to Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s finances and her nonprofit organization.
The filings released Friday show the couple’s earnings remained relatively steady throughout the years covered.

Between 2022 and 2024, Newsom and his wife earned a combined total of $1.4 to $1.6 million annually, according to the tax documents- the result of their respective salaries, investments, profits from their blind trusts, and other ventures, including Siebel Newsom’s film production company.
The governor’s office did not release tax information from 2025, as Newsom and his wife have filed for an extension.
The exception in income was 2021, when the couple sold their home in Marin County, netting more than $1 million in additional revenue.
The two paid a combined $2.79 million in federal taxes during the time period in question, or between 30 to 35 percent of their earnings.

Barring that, the filings were not immediately revelatory.
Newsom reported an income of roughly $192,000 annually from his salary as governor, while his wife’s income averaged around $148,000 from her role as the founder of two nonprofit groups.
Siebel Newsom is the founder of the Representation Project, a nonprofit aimed at combating gender stereotypes, and the cofounder of the California Partners Project, which advocates for ‘gender equity’ across the state of California.
In a statement provided to the New York Times, a spokesperson for the governor’s office said the tax documents ‘reflect consistent financials over the four-year period’ and that they ‘contradicted the false right-wing claims’ that the pair had ”enriched themselves’ through new ventures and nonprofit organizations.”
Even so, the investigation may not be over any time soon.
The Daily Mail reported earlier this month that Newsom and his wife have retained the counsel of Washington litigator, Abbe Lowell, to represent them in a personal capacity amid the escalating Trump DOJ probe.
