Google has launched a new feature in Australia that allows users to prioritize certain news outlets, including SBS News, in their search results.

This feature, called preferred sources, operates alongside Google’s usual ranking system. It is available only to users who actively choose to use it, and settings can be adjusted or removed at any time.

Here’s how to make SBS News your preferred source on Google

As one of Australia’s most reliable news sources, SBS News now offers you the option to see more of its public-interest journalism on your Google results page.

  1. Sign in to your Google account
  2. Search for a topic that’s currently in the news
  3. In the Top Stories section, click the icon showing two overlapping cards with a star
  4. Search for SBS Australia and select it as your preferred source
  5. Click ‘Reload results’, and stories from SBS News will start appearing near the top of your Google search results.

What are Google preferred sources?

The preferred sources feature lets you customize your Google experience to display more content from SBS News or any other chosen news outlets when you browse Google sites and apps.

When a selected news source provides relevant and current coverage, its stories may be featured more prominently in the Top Stories section. This setting is applicable only when you’re logged into your Google account.
