The reopening of a historic California country club was abruptly halted due to explosive domestic abuse allegations involving its married proprietors.

The renowned Rio Bravo Country Club, located in Bakersfield, was set for a significant transformation after being acquired by Jeremy and Kimberly Willer in 2023.

The Willers purchased the club for $4.9 million, with aspirations to rejuvenate its former glory as a gathering spot for California’s elite.

However, their ambitious plans unraveled dramatically last year when Kimberly accused Jeremy of assaulting her during a drunken outburst before he made his escape on a golf cart.

Renovation efforts at the club came to a standstill as Jeremy faced arrest and charges of battery, which he has contested.

Compounding the scandal, Kimberly further claimed that Jeremy’s departure was linked to her ongoing breast cancer treatment.

The scandal was the latest setback for the club, which has been beset by financial worries and controversy almost since its inception in 1975.

Ownership has since transferred to Jeremy’s father, who reopened the golf course last week under a new name as it seeks to distance itself from the messy fallout.

The fabled club in Bakersfield, California was once a haven of A-listers and elites, but it fell on hard times in the 1980s and has passed through ownerships in the decades since

It is a far cry from when the country club was founded as a hub of California’s elite, drawing A-list celebrities and moguls to its socialite owner George Nickel Jr.

But it eventually fell on hard times and Nickel filed for bankruptcy in 1985. The estate passed through numerous owners in the subsequent decades as it lost its star-studded appeal.

The Willers had promised to restore the golf resort to its former glory, pledging to bring the course and its high-society culture back to life.

But members say their hopes fell apart along with the Willers’ marriage and the couple filed for dissolution of marriage in December 2025, with Kimberly alleging domestic violence.

According to court records first revealed by KGET, Jeremy was accused of punching his wife in the face that March in a drunken rage.

Kimberly told cops that the incident was sparked by an argument about Jeremy not being allowed in the home, which she claimed led him to punch her in the face, documents showed.

Police said they found Kimberly at the home with a bloody nose and an arrest document said Jeremy had fled the scene in a golf cart.

Jeremy denied the allegations and told police he was ‘defending himself’, police said. He was charged with two misdemeanor counts of battery on a spouse and battery on a person. The status of the charges is unclear.

The couple are next due in court on March 17, where they will have a hearing to show cause for the domestic violence allegations in their dissolution of marriage filing.

Jeremy told 17News at the time that the fallout from the incident directly led to the closure of the Rio Bravo Country Club.

His arrest on domestic violence charges are not the only legal trouble he is involved in, as public records show he has four other legal actions pending against him.

This includes two breach of contract lawsuits, and a wrongful termination lawsuit also filed against Kimberly, reports SFGate

Amid their bitter separation, Kimberly slammed her husband in a series of since-deleted social media posts.

In one post, she reportedly wrote: ‘What would you do if your husband leaves after finding out you’re receiving treatments for breast cancer and tells you he’s not (your) husband?’

Kimberly declined to comment when contacted by the Daily Mail. Jeremy did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The fallout of their marriage left the storied Rio Bravo Country Club in limbo before Jeremy’s father Randy took ownership in February.

The scandal has left the historic Rio Bravo Country Club in limbo, with Jeremy’s father Randy since taking ownership of the estate in February

Randy has renamed the club Scarlet & Gray and the club’s social media shows it only reopened for business last week.

The country club can be traced back to California land baron Henry Miller, the patriarch of a wealthy socialite family whose descendants include Tucker Carlson and writer Nellie Bowles.

Miller’s great-grandson, George Nickel Jr, helped construct the California Aqueduct, a 444-mile dam that built modern California by irrigating the area from Los Angeles to San Diego.

Nickel used his high-society roots to build the Rio Bravo Country Club into a haven for the elites in the 1970s.

As the club began to decline, it was taken over by Wells Fargo to satisfy a $30 million debt for Nickel, and the course has seen a revolving door of owners in the decades since.

In 2023, it was bought by the Willers for a relative bargain of $4.9 million.

The valuation was seen as a steal, and listing agent John Willingham told SFGate at the time: ‘The truth is if you bought it for the acreage alone, it’s — no pun intended — it’s dirt cheap.

‘You can’t buy subdivision land anywhere near that price.’

The Daily Mail has contacted Scarlet & Gray for comment.
