Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has issued a 25-page letter to Americans urging them to oppose President Donald Trump in the upcoming midterm elections.
The IRGC, which has repeatedly sought to influence the Nov. 3 US elections, blamed Trump and his support for Israel for the war and urged voters to reject both at the ballot box.
“America’s national security and the lives of its service members are entrusted to someone who is not only an inveterate liar but is also an insanely avaricious man whose only motivation in life is the accumulation of greater wealth,” IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohebbi said in the regime’s latest attack on Trump.
The letter accused Trump of hiding the “peaceful nature” of Iran’s nuclear program, despite allegations by the International Atomic Energy Agency that Tehran was enriching uranium beyond the levels required for a civilian power plant.
The United States and Israel have defended the war in Iran largely as an effort to prevent the Islamic republic from acquiring nuclear weapons.
The IRGC also condemned the US decision to designate the security force as a terrorist organization. It claimed there was not “a single verifiable instance where the IRGC has committed an act of violence against civilians.”
The statement comes as the regime faces accusations that it killed between 7,000 and 30,000 protesters during a brutal January crackdown on dissent. Iranian authorities have defended the violence by asserting that foreign actors instigated the unrest.
The letter further argued that the war was devastating the US economy by driving up fuel prices amid the fighting in the Middle East.
“The US economy is on the precipice of collapse, and yet he keeps on telling Americans that the economy is booming and the prices will soon start coming down,” the letter said.
“This is, perhaps, his biggest lie,” it added. “Soon, the dam will break, and the economy will implode, causing, unfortunately, great pain for Americans for many many years.”
The IRGC has long argued that it can inflict enough economic damage on the United States to force Washington to give in, even as Iran faces severe economic pressure under Trump’s Operation Economic Outcast.
Iran is now in a trade free fall under the US blockade, while its rial currency has plunged to historic lows this week.
Mohebbi also rejected claims that Iran had lost control of the Strait of Hormuz, where oil flows are running at roughly half their prewar level.
“The fact that the Americans might manage, at great expense, considerable trouble and high risk to sneak a small vessel through the Strait of Hormuz under cover of darkness to export, say, 100 or 200 barrels of oil does not mean the Strait is open,” Mohebbi said.
More than 7 million barrels of oil are leaving the Strait of Hormuz each day, while total crude exports from the Persian Gulf have fallen to 72% of prewar levels, according to maritime tracker Kpler.
