US Embassy in Baghdad had warned of potential attacks
The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad had heightened its security warnings just before a missile struck a helipad within its compound.
On Friday, the embassy elevated its security alert level to Level 4 for Iraq, cautioning that Iran and militias aligned with Iran have a history of targeting U.S. citizens, assets, and infrastructure, with potential for future attacks.
The missile hit inside the embassy’s perimeter shortly after the Green Zone—Baghdad’s heavily fortified area that includes government buildings and foreign embassies—was placed on alert, according to security officials who requested anonymity due to not being authorized to speak to the media.
As of now, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad has not issued any statements regarding the incident.
Known as one of the largest U.S. diplomatic posts globally, the Baghdad embassy complex has frequently been the target of rocket and drone assaults by militias supported by Iran.
These militias have increasingly intensified their attacks on bases that host U.S. and coalition forces.
