Judge slammed for 'joke' apology to Trump shooter

An incident in Washington D.C. has ignited controversy after a federal judge expressed regret over the treatment of a man accused of plotting against Donald Trump. The apology was directed toward Cole Tomas Allen, who is accused of attempting to enter the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner with the intention of harming the President.

Thirty-one-year-old Allen has been in solitary confinement since being taken into federal custody. His confinement conditions, which included being placed on suicide watch, were a focal point during a recent court session led by Magistrate Judge Zia Faruqui.

During the hearing, Judge Faruqui criticized the legal representatives involved for the harsh conditions under which Allen was being held. He stated, “I owe him an apology. We have a duty to ensure his wellbeing. Mr. Allen, I apologize for the shortcomings in how you have been treated.”

Judge Faruqui also drew a parallel between Allen’s situation and the treatment of those arrested during the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021. He remarked on the severity of Allen’s restraints, noting, “It is deeply unsettling that someone with no prior criminal record was subjected to such extreme measures. I’ve yet to hear of a single January 6 defendant who faced five-point restraints or was placed in a secure cell. If the only means to ensure his safety are the most severe, then there’s an issue here.”

Faruqui went on to compare Allen’s imprisonment to defendants arrest for rioting at the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

‘To me, it’s extremely disturbing that he was put in five-point restraints, a person with no criminal history,’ Faruqui added. ‘It’s troubling. I never heard of one Jan. 6 defendant who was put in five-point restraints or in a safe cell. If the only way to keep him safe is the most punitive thing, that’s a problem.’

The judge ordered officials at the DC jail to update him by tomorrow morning about Allen’s requested jail accommodations. Allen’s attorneys filed a motion on Sunday demanding he be removed from suicide watch restrictions in prison.

While admonishing prison officials, Judge Faruqui emphasized that Allen is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Yet Allen posted a manifesto admitting to the shooting, and video footage captured the would-be assassin rushing past Secret Service while wielding a shotgun before agents opened fire.

Trump’s allies and online supporters reacted with outrage to the judge’s apology to Allen by demanding his removal. Allen has not entered a plea in the case.

‘Remove this judge NOW!’ wrote MAGA influencer Eric Daugherty on X.

Nick Sortor, a popular online Trump supporter, also slammed Faruqui: ‘WTF? Magistrate judge Zia Faruqui in DC APOLOGIZED to the WHCA shooter Cole Allen for the “treatment” he’s received so far in jail. DC judges are an absolute JOKE.’

Allen appeared in court alongside his public defenders, wearing an orange jumpsuit and white undershirt. He maintained a calm, emotionless demeanor throughout the hearing.

It was the first time that he had been seen publicly since Friday as faces three counts, including attempted assassination of the President and two guns charges.

On Wednesday, federal prosecutors released a chilling selfie of Allen pictured in his hotel room, apparently clad with weapons, moments before he charged a security checkpoint in an alleged plot to kill Donald Trump.

Prosecutors say that he took the mirror selfie in his hotel room at 8.03pm in full evening dress just minutes before he arrived at the event with a shotgun.

‘He was wearing a black dress shirt, black slacks, and what appears to be a red necktie, tucked into his pants,’ the court filing states.

He was also wearing a ‘small leather bag’ filled with ammunition, a shoulder holster, a sheathed knife, pliers, and wire cutters.

Prosecutors say that after taking the selfie, Allen searched the President’s schedule again at 8.13pm, then looked at live video of Trump arriving at 8.27pm, immediately before his emailed confession went out to family and friends at 8.30pm.

Video footage released Tuesday by the Washington Post also provides the clearest look yet at the opening four seconds of the confrontation, with agents firing on Allen and missing every shot.

An officer draws his weapon within two seconds of Allen appearing on camera, then fires multiple times in his direction, with at least some rounds passing close to other agents as Allen runs past them.

The footage, shot from a fixed angle, does not show Allen firing his weapon, though authorities have charged him with discharging a firearm during a crime of violence.

No muzzle flash from his shotgun is visible as he sprints past agents.

After the video emerged, the Secret Service responded by claiming its security measures are ‘rigorously tested’ and ‘were critical in mitigating the threat and preventing significant harm.’
