Killer who hunted female hiker takes plea to avoid death penalty

An Arizona man who pursued and fatally stabbed a woman on a Phoenix hiking trail has accepted a plea agreement that removes the possibility of a death sentence.

Zion Teasley, 25, pleaded guilty to the 2023 murder of Lauren Heike, 29, who was stabbed 15 times during the attack.

According to prosecutors, Teasley ambushed Heike and chased her along the trail. Investigators found several of her belongings caught on a nearby barbed-wire fence, apparently after she tried to escape. Authorities said Heike and Teasley did not know each other.

Police said Heike sustained multiple fatal injuries to her upper body before her body was left on the remote trail.

Teasley was arrested five days later after DNA recovered from Heike’s shoe connected him to the crime. Investigators were also able to identify him through a criminal database because of his prior convictions.

A 300-page police report released in 2025 said Teasley had never encountered Heike before the killing. Investigators alleged that he attacked her at random while experiencing a personal crisis involving his gender identity and sexuality. The report does not establish any broader link between gender identity and violence.

Before the murder, Teasley reportedly wrote in a diary that he was “battling with my gender identity and sexuality.” He also described feeling conflicted because he was a Christian and believed those feelings were not permitted.

“I want to live a life of serving god, but how can I with these and other sins in the way. Ik (I know) I am forgiven for my sins. But it’s still a lot of pressure and it’s hard to maintain a good Christian mindset 24/7,” Teasley wrote, according to the police report.

Prosecutors said Teasley’s diary also described a mental health crisis before the attack. In one entry, he reportedly wrote that he felt depressed “when I see a beautiful woman and I’m a man.”

Hours after Heike’s death, detectives found a computer at Teasley’s home that had been used to search for ways to avoid being “jumped,” investigators said in the report.

A search of Teasley’s phone uncovered images from Heike’s social media that had been viewed after her death. Investigators also found photographs of Teasley wearing clothing similar to the outfit Heike had on when she was killed, according to ABC15.

During questioning, investigators showed Teasley surveillance footage depicting a man fleeing the area near the crime scene. His response, according to the police report, was: “That’s me.”

Teasley told police he knew Heike only from news coverage. Speaking about her appearance, he reportedly said, “That’s what I would want to look like.”

When investigators asked whether he had planned the killing, Teasley replied: “I’m telling you, if I was gonna do something like that, it definitely wouldn’t be premeditated.”

Investigators also documented multiple scratches and other marks on Teasley’s body, according to the police report.

During the investigation of Teasley, it was revealed that he had an alleged relationship with a Phoenix police patrol officer.

According to the report, the two exchanged in a ‘large amount’ of messages up until the day Teasley was arrested for Heike’s murder.

He faced the possibility of the death penalty if convicted of Heike’s murder, but his plea deal this week will take that off the table. Teasley is set to be sentenced in December, and faces up to life behind bars without possibility of parole.

Teasley’s plea deal will also see him admit to one count of sexual exploitation of a minor, in a separate case from March 2019, court records show.

As part of Teasley’s deal with prosecutors, he will have two felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon and burglary dismissed, stemming from a January 2020 incident.

Heike’s family said in a statement following the guilty plea: ‘After 3½ incredibly long and painful years, our family supports the State’s decision to enter into a plea agreement in Lauren’s case.

Following Teasley's guilty plea, Heike's family said they 'hope to finally begin healing and to focus less on how Lauren¿s life ended and more on the beautiful life she lived and the love and memories she left with all of us'

‘This means we will not have to endure a trial or sit in a courtroom and hear every painful detail of the crime that took Lauren from us.

‘There is a tremendous sense of relief in knowing that we will be spared that additional trauma.

‘We fully supported the State’s efforts to seek the death penalty, but we are in agreement with the plea offer made by the defendant. He offered to plead guilty to first degree murder and accept a natural life sentence.

‘As this chapter comes to an end, we hope to finally begin healing and to focus less on how Lauren’s life ended and more on the beautiful life she lived and the love and memories she left with all of us.’
