Timothee Chalamet found himself in the spotlight during Conan O’Brien’s Oscars monologue on Sunday night, following a stir caused by his remarks about ballet. However, his girlfriend, Kylie Jenner, was reportedly by his side, offering support, as analyzed by a body language specialist.
The Oscar-nominated actor drew criticism after a conversation with Matthew McConaughey for Variety’s Actors on Actors on February 24. During the discussion, Chalamet expressed concerns about the future of the film industry, remarking, “I hope cinemas and the movie industry endure. I have no desire to end up in ballet or opera, or any field that feels like it’s on life support, desperate for survival when public interest has waned.”
Attempting to clarify, he added, “No disrespect to those in ballet and opera. I realize I probably just lost a few viewers with that comment. It was an unnecessary jab.”
His casual remarks sparked a significant backlash, drawing responses from notable figures such as ballet icon Misty Copeland and filmmaker Steven Spielberg.
Given the controversy, it was inevitable that O’Brien would incorporate it into his comedic routine on Oscar night.
So, it is no surprise that his recent controversy was fodder for O’Brien on Sunday night.
‘Security is extremely tight tonight. I’m just going to mention that,’ tuxedo-clad O’Brien said to the crowd inside Los Angeles’ iconic Dolby Theatre.
He then quipped, ‘I’m told there’s a concern about attacks from both the opera and ballet communities.’

Chalamet faced his fate during O’Brien’s Oscars monologue on Sunday night and his girlfriend, Kylie Jenner, protected him more than ever, according to a body language expert
The camera then quickly cut to Chalamet, who could be seen nervously smiling beside his girlfriend Jenner – and according to body language expert James, the reality star wasn’t thrilled by the joke.
James told the Daily Mail that Chalamet’s body language suggested ‘a chastened and quite submissive response’ from the actor.
‘Sitting in his pure white “innocent” suit and leaning back to take the roasting solo, with no attachment touches or rituals from the Jessica Rabbit-styled Kylie at his side, his giveaway trait of a humble response came from the nose wrinkle he added to his beaming, good-natured smile,’ James said.
‘His cheeks raised and rounded and he displayed his upper teeth only, in a forced-looking grin while Kylie leaned over him protectively, flashing a maternal-looking warning expression from her eyes as well as a tolerant and calm-looking mouth smile,’ the body language expert added.
James noted that in response to the joke, Chalamet ‘opened his mouth wider in an expression of embarrassment and nodded slowly in a gesture of recognition and acceptance.’
Meanwhile, the body language expert said Jenner ‘looked less comfortable, clenching and unclenching her hands before performing one very odd, loud clap that suggested a desire to get the joke over and move on.’
Chalamet was also called out by Alexandre Singh on stage as he won Best Live-Action Short Film, for his piece, Two People Exchanging Saliva.
‘We believe art can change people’s souls,’ Singh said.
