Letter returned by post office after finally giving up after 71 years

A 33-year-old orphan has received a remarkable piece of his mother’s past after her long-missing baptismal certificate unexpectedly turned up at a California church 71 years after it was mailed.

Lucas Woodward was still a toddler when his mother, Pamela Jean Haslam, died. He never imagined she would somehow make an appearance in his life again—just weeks before his wedding.

That extraordinary reunion began in late August, when Woodward received a call from Stephen McHale, rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Alameda, California.

The church had received an unexplained letter bearing a postmark dated October 26, 1955.

Inside the white envelope was Pamela’s baptismal certificate. The letter also carried a 2026 return-to-sender date, adding another layer of mystery to its decades-late arrival.

“It just came with zero explanation,” McHale told Our News Outlet. “I’m curious what it was doing just sitting there [all this time].”

The rector may never learn exactly where the document spent the past 71 years. However, a United States Postal Service spokesperson told Our News Outlet that the certificate was probably not moving through the mail system continuously since 1955. Instead, it may have recently re-entered circulation.

“In most cases like this, these incidents do not involve mail that had been lost in our network and later found. What we typically find is that old letters and postcards—sometimes purchased at flea markets, antique shops and even online—are re-entered into our system,” the spokesperson said.

The USPS processes billions of mail pieces every year, with postal employees handling an average of more than five million items each business day, according to the spokesperson.

“Based on that figure, we can estimate that since 1955 there have been more than 11.5 trillion pieces of mail processed and ultimately delivered,” they said.

Whatever its journey, the certificate arrived at the perfect time for Woodward, who now lives in Michigan. The unexpected document gave him a tangible connection to his mother to carry into his wedding day.

Pamela died from cancer in 1996, when Lucas was only a toddler. About a decade later, his father, John, also died, leaving Lucas an orphan during his teenage years.

“It was a voice from a distant path,” McHale told Our News Outlet. “He was really [happy].”

McHale eventually tracked down the Michigan resident after sharing the baptismal certificate in a local Facebook group. The post prompted amateur genealogists to search for Pamela’s relatives, and public records ultimately led them to Woodward and a phone number associated with him.

“I was delighted,” McHale said. The two men had a “lovely” phone conversation, with the rector describing Woodward as one of the kindest people he had met.

Through their correspondence, McHale also discovered that Pamela’s parents, Robert and Lois Haslam, had spent a short period at the now-closed Alameda Air Force Base during the Korean War while Robert was serving in the navy.

The family would eventually move to Massachusetts.

‘Lucas said they left Alameda fairly quickly, so it’s possible they left town before the letter could be delivered,’ McHale wrote on Facebook.

The church was able to verify the document’s authenticity, as their handwritten records showed Pamela was baptized at the church. The address on the envelope was also the old Air Force Base’s location.

The special document has since been mailed to Michigan, where Woodward had it just in time for his wedding.

Our News Outlet has reached out to Woodward for comment.
