According to local Russian authorities, a minimum of four individuals lost their lives, including three near Moscow, during one of the most extensive overnight assaults by Ukraine on Russian soil since the conflict began.
In Khimki, a city just northwest of Moscow, a drone strike claimed the life of a woman, while two men perished in Pogorelki, a village situated six miles from the capital, as reported by local Governor Andrei Vorobyev.
In his social media updates, Vorobyev noted that Ukrainian drones had inflicted damage on unspecified “infrastructure” and several residential towers.
Within Moscow’s boundaries, at least 12 people sustained injuries during the nighttime attack, particularly near the city’s oil refinery entrance, according to Mayor Sergei Sobyanin.
Sobyanin assured that the “technology” of the refinery remained unharmed.
State agency Tass, referencing Sobyanin, revealed that Russian defenses intercepted 81 drones aimed at Moscow overnight. This incident represents one of the most significant assaults on the Russian capital since the launch of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
One man was also killed as a drone struck a lorry in the Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, according to local authorities.
Russian air defenses destroyed a total of 556 drones over Russia, the country’s defense ministry said.
Russia’s largest airport — Moscow’s Sheremetyevo — said drone debris had fallen on its premises without causing damage.
