A wind-driven brushfire erupted in western Malibu on Thursday afternoon, quickly expanding to 20 acres and triggering evacuation warnings as firefighters worked to slow the flames.
Known as the Bryson Fire, the blaze began at about 4:40 p.m. near Mulholland Highway and Encinal Canyon Road, close to Camp Kilpatrick, according to fire radio traffic.
Fueled by strong winds, the fire grew from approximately a half-acre to five acres in just 15 minutes as it moved south through medium brush.
Evacuation warnings were issued for zones KAN-U017, LEO-U015 and SYC-U016.
People in the affected zones were advised to monitor official alerts and be ready to evacuate if conditions deteriorate.
Initial reports from firefighters at the scene indicated that no structures were immediately threatened.
The fire began shortly after power was shut off in central and western Malibu at about 4 p.m., disrupting traffic signals in the area.
As the blaze spread, fire officials sent additional ground crews and aircraft to support the firefighting effort.
Officials had not determined the cause of the fire.
