A 24-year-old man was arrested early Monday on suspicion of burglary and assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly broke into his family’s Oceanside home and refused to leave, police said.

The incident began around 7:15 a.m. when officers were called to the home on Pala Road near Douglas Drive by a woman who reported her son was armed with a knife and involved in an altercation with her husband, said Oceanside police spokesperson Jennifer Atenza.

Officers went to the home and left after they thought they had de-escalated and resolved the situation.

Then, around 8 a.m., the woman called back to say her son had broken a window, entered the home and was refusing to leave. The suspect also was seen with a gun, later determined by police to be a realistic-looking BB gun, which he allegedly used to threaten a neighbor, Atenza said.

Because they had been told the man might be armed, a large number of police responded, including some riding in an armored tactical vehicle known as a Bearcat. Police negotiators also responded and tried to persuade the man to leave the home and surrender.

After deploying some non-lethal weapons, including firing bean bag rounds, officers were able to arrest the man outside the home around 10 a.m., Atenza said.

“I know there was a lot of in and out. He would come out, there was some posturing and some gesturing, and he went back in,” she said.

No one was injured in the incident, she said.
