Nick Castle, the actor and filmmaker forever linked to one of horror cinema’s most chilling villains, first broke through in Hollywood as the knife-wielding killer who stalked Jamie Lee Curtis throughout the 1978 slasher classic Halloween.
Audiences rarely saw the man behind the terror. As Michael Myers, Castle spent nearly the entire film hidden beneath an eerie mask famously adapted from a William Shatner Captain Kirk face mold from Star Trek.
His career, however, stretched well beyond that silent, menacing role. Castle later co-wrote the cult action-sci-fi hit Escape from New York, starring Kurt Russell, before building a résumé as a director.
Now 78, the Hollywood veteran made a rare public appearance in Los Angeles, stepping out in an orange T-shirt, cargo pants, a baseball cap and sunglasses.
With a full white beard completing the look, the once-masked horror icon appeared almost impossible to recognize.

Castle has stepped back from directing feature films, but he isn’t completely retired and still works on the odd project now and then.
He stays active in the entertainment community by doing voice work and participating in fan events where he signs his moniker for hundreds of autograph hunters.
Our News Outlet has reached out to Castle for comment but has not yet received a response.
Born in Kingsport, Tennessee, Castle got his start in the movie-making business by just being at the right place at the right time.
Castle had been hanging out on the Los Angeles set of Halloween to learn about filmmaking when the director, John Carpenter, a former classmate at the University of Southern California, asked him to wear the Captain Kirk mask and amble around as The Shape.
He ended up playing the role of the killer Michael Myers and was paid $25 a day.

The film co-starred Curtis as the surviving heroine Laurie Strode and Donald Pleasence as the psychiatrist, Dr Samuel Loomis, Myers continued to outwit with his vanishing act.
Castle didn’t appear in 1981’s Halloween II but he went on to have cameos in David Gordon Green’s sequel trilogy, Halloween in 2018, Halloween Kills in 2021 and Halloween Ends in 2022.

Castle co-wrote the script for the 1981 independent film Escape from New York, which starred Russell as the rugged, eyepatch-wearing antihero Snake Plissken and was directed by his college buddy Carpenter.
Castle’s directorial debut was in 1982’s Tag: The Assassination Game, starring Linda Hamilton, Bruce Abbott and Robert Carradine.
He then directed The Last Starfighter (1984), The Boy Who Could Fly (1986), Dennis the Menace (1993) and Major Payne (1995).
Castle wrote the 2007 musical-drama August Rush, which starred Freddie Highmore, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Robin Williams and Keri Russell.
The role of Michael Myers, however, remains Castle’s most famous and talked-about acting role.

The 2018 sequel reunited him with Curtis whose character trapped him in a room in her heavily fortified house
‘The fact of the matter is, my appearance in the first one was so off the cuff. It was to fill a void. John needed someone to walk around with a mask on,’ Castle told Movieweb in 2018.
‘John has mentioned how much he liked my walk. Just the fact that, it was whatever I normally do. The direction on the first one was nil. It was really just, “Go across the street and walk towards me.”
‘In fact, I have mentioned this before in interviews, before I did the first shot, John said, “Walk across the street and walk across here.”
‘I said, “John, this is the first shot of this character, what do you want me to do?” And he said, “Just go across the street and walk.” It was night, the sun was coming up, so he tells me to just walk.
‘If there is a lesson to any of this, it’s that sometimes things happen for no reason, and you have the right elements at the right time.
‘I think my size at the time, I was only 150 pounds, about six feet tall, thin, angular, and whatever what I did, I ended up walking slow and being methodical. But without being robotic.’
Castle concluded: ‘All those choices, I guess, were important to having a certain amount of mystery.’
In his personal life, Castle has been married to Mary Charlene Napp since 1981. They have one child together.
