Jadon Sancho has rejoined Borussia Dortmund on loan from Manchester United until the end of the season.

While Dortmund fans will be delighted with the move, there is no option for the Bundesliga club to re-sign Sancho permanently in the summer having sold the 23-year-old top United in a £73m deal in 2021.

The Englishman proved to be a real fan-favourite during his first stint in Germany. After making his debut at the age of 17 in October 2017, Sancho would go on to score 50 goals and provide 60 assists in 137 games for Die Schwarzgelben.

After the Bundesliga club officially announced Sancho’s return, when could he make his debut?

When could Sancho make his debut?

Following a winter break in Germany, Dortmund are back in action this Saturday as they travel to SV Darmstadt.

Edin Terzic’s side currently sit fifth in the league and are 15 points behind league leaders Bayer Leverkusen.

Sancho could make his debut against Darmstadt this weekend, providing he is registered in time and has been added to the DFL’s player database.

According to the official Bundesliga website, If the contractual documents meet the necessary criteria, a player is then added to the DFL’s player database.

Once the player has been added by the DFL to his new club’s list of eligible players, he is allowed to play for the club.

As alluded to, the Englishman has not played since late August – therefore – it is unlikely he will feature from the off this weekend.

Sancho shot to prominence as one of Europe’s most exciting wide forwards in his first spell at the club

HOW A TRANSFER CAN BE MADE OFFICIAL IN THE BUNDESLIGA

1. Contact – An agreement is reached between the player in question and his new club.

2. Paperwork – The club then sends a request via email or fax to the German Football League (DFL) for the player to be added to the official transfer list. The player and his current club must sign this form.

3. Submission – The forms are examined by the players’ department of the DFL.

4. Registration – If all the requirements have been fulfilled, the player is added to the DFL’s player database.

5. Condition – The transfer can only be finalised once the player is added to the official transfer list.

6. Publication – The transfer list is made available on bundesliga.com.

7. Tying the loose ends – After the player has been added to the transfer list, all documents pertaining to the contract with his new club are submitted by that club to the DFL.

8. Data check – The players’ department of the DFL ensures the documents are complete and correct.

9. Completion – If the contractual documents meet the necessary criteria, they are added to the DFL’s player database.

10. Approval – Once the player has been added by the DFL to his new club’s list of eligible players, he is allowed to play for the club.

11. Confirmation – The updated list of eligible players is then sent to the player’s new club for their records.

12. In the squad – Before his first appearance, the player is included in the matchday squad, which is published online by the match officials and the two clubs.

13. Notification – The German Football Association (DFB) are informed of the player’s eligibility.

What are Dortmund’s upcoming fixtures?

After their showdown with Darmstadt, Dortmund’s next game will take place a week later when they face FC Koln away.

Sancho’s first home game on his return to Dortmund could take place on Sunday, January 28, when they face Bochum.

Dortmund’s next five games after Darmstadt is as follows:

  • FC Koln (A) – Saturday, January 20
  • Bochum (H) – Sunday, January 28
  • 1. FC Heidenheim (A) – Friday, February 2
  • SC Frieburg (H) – Friday, February 9
  • Wolfsburg (A) – Saturday, February 17

What has Sancho said on the move?

The player, who rejoined social media by posting a photo of himself in Dortmund kit, is delighted to be back at the club.

Sancho said: ‘When I came into the dressing-room today, it felt like coming home. I know the club inside and out, I’ve always been very close with the fans here, and I’ve never lost contact with those in charge.

‘I can’t wait to see my team-mates again, go out on the pitch, play football with a smile on my face, prepare goals, score goals and help qualify for the Champions League.’
