Bryan Kohberger, who has confessed to a quadruple homicide, maintains a stoic expression as he listens to the heart-wrenching words of parents, siblings, grandparents, and friends of the four murdered University of Idaho students during their victim impact statements in court.
In a particularly moving statement that receives applause from the courtroom, Kaylee Goncalves’s sister, Alivea Goncalves, addresses Kohberger directly. She declares, “My sister Kaylee and her best friend Maddie were not yours to take. They were not yours to study, watch, or silence. They represent everything you could never embody: they are loved, accepted, lively, successful, courageous, and strong.”
Kaylee’s father, Steve Goncalves, also speaks directly to Kohberger, labeling him a “joke” and asserting, “The world’s attention is on this case because of the kids, not because of you.” He further notes how easily authorities apprehended Kohberger, remarking that despite his academic success, he still lacked intelligence.
Kohberger declines to address the court after listening to hours of powerful statements from victims’ families. He takes a last-minute plea, sparing him the death penalty. The judge ultimately sentences him to four consecutive life sentences.
Judge Steven Hippler calls Bryan Kohberger a “coward” who “slithered through the sliding glass door at 1122 King Road” and “now stands unmasked.”
