A political figure who once attempted to bring a £10 million legal claim against Donald Trump has been jailed after being convicted of defrauding an elderly woman of her life insurance payout.
Kamran Malik, 59, a former mayoral candidate, used his company KM Legal Ltd to present himself as a solicitor and siphoned off a £51,000 life insurance payment owed to the woman.
Metropolitan Police footage has now shown the moment officers arrested Malik at his home in January 2022, with his left hand visibly wrapped in bandages as they confronted him in his living room.
During the arrest, Malik, from Plaistow in east London, insisted police had mistaken him for someone else.
“It’s basically, this one, I am not actually the person — I’m the attorney right,” he told the officers.
Snaresbrook Crown Court heard that Malik was detained at his home over the theft of a life insurance payout due to Cydatty Bogie, after her friend Cynthia Smart died by suicide in 2017.
Prosecutors said Malik also collected more than £12,000 in rent from Ms Smart’s flat in Ilford and attempted to sell a pensioner’s £400,000 home while falsely claiming to act as an “attorney.”
The court was told the repeat fraudster placed Derek Jeffery’s detached three-bedroom property up for auction while Mr Jeffery was still living in it, after producing paperwork that named Malik as a trustee.
Despite denying the charges, Malik was convicted by a jury of six counts of fraud and one count of money laundering between August 14, 2017 and November 12, 2020.

He was jailed for six-and-a-half years.
During the trial, prosecutor Martin Hooper told the jury that Malik acted ‘as a legal advisor who took advantage of vulnerable people and the elderly’.
‘Mr Malik held himself out to be a solicitor but wasn’t one,’ he said.
Malik befriended Ms Bogie – who was active in local politics and ran to be West Ham’s MP in 2015 – arranging a deed of trust between her and her friend Ms Smart through his firm in August 2017.
‘Ms Bogie had known Malik eight to nine years, getting to know him when he began running for Mayor, she was involved in local politics and wanted to help him,’ Mr Hooper said.
‘In her mind, he held himself out as a solicitor and worked in an office,’ he added.
The deed stated Ms Bogie would be the beneficiary of Ms Smart’s estate in the event of her death.
But after her friend’s death, Ms Bogie went to Malik for help and he told her to bring paperwork about Ms Smart’s life insurance.

Malik made a claim on Ms Smart’s life insurance which was supposed to be paid to Ms Bogie but was instead paid to Malik’s company account.
When Ms Bogie confronted him, Malik ‘tried to fob her off’, the court was told.
Sadly Ms Bogie committed suicide in March 2022, so her estate became a relevant issue in this case,’ Mr Hooper said.
Sentencing Malik, Judge Murray Shanks said: ‘You were masquerading as some sort of solicitor and you employed others in the business as paralegals and so on.
‘But the whole business was a sham. You profess it was to help other people, I don’t know about that. I am not in a position to say there was a wider fraud going on in the business, but I doubt it was helping anybody.
‘There’s no doubt you abused a position of trust with Ms Bogie, who came to you as a friend and you really abused her trust.
‘Mr Jeffreys’ life was somewhat turned upside down. He was not really in a fit state to be dragged to court.’
Appearing in court wearing a grey prison tracksuit, Malik nodded and smiled to his wife in the public gallery as he was led to the cells.
Malik founded Communities United Party and continued to advertise ‘free legal advice’ on social media during the three-week trial.
He placed fifth in the 2024 Newham mayoral election in London and stood again in May but came last with just 324 votes.
During his most recent campaign, videos on Malik’s Facebook page showed a burgundy Range Rover with a ‘Vote for Kamran Malik’ decal alongside his bearded face.
Other pictures of his campaign material showed a promise to ‘end financial wastage caused by local government mismanagement’ while claiming to offer free advice and support from ‘highly trained personnel’.
In videos shared with his 6,000 TikTok followers, Malik advertised ‘British husband dead house recovered’ and ‘benefit issues fraud prevention lawyers’.
Malik previously attempted to sue Donald Trump in 2016 for claiming parts of London were so radicalised that police feared for their lives during his first presidential campaign.
His Communities United Party sought £10million from Trump for allegedly defaming Muslims living in the Forest Gate area but a High Court judge dismissed the claim in October that year.
In June 2018, Malik was jailed for a year after he scammed migrants out of thousands of pounds for bogus immigration advice.
He conned six vulnerable migrants out of £16,000 by charging extortionate fees between November 2014 and October 2016.
His victims included a political refugee married to a European citizen seeking residency status for family dependents, a woman seeking asylum after fleeing Iran for her life.
Malik even threatened to deport a man to Bangladesh after he refused to pay his fees.
The fraudster was previously jailed for 24 weeks in 2014 for two offences of providing immigration advice and services when he was not qualified to do so.
