TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA)— A non-tropical area of low pressure is expected to form in a few days, the National Hurricane Center said.

The area of low pressure off the Southeastern United States is expected to form in a day or so, a few hundred miles offshore of North Carolina.

Tropical or subtropical development is possible as the system moves northeastward over the warm waters of the Gulf Stream.

The NHC reports that by early next week, the system is projected to move into cooler waters and meet an area with strong upper-level winds. This will likely halt the potential for further development.

The chance of formation in the next 48 hours is 10 percent, while the chance of formation in the next seven days is 20 percent.

Development for a tropical wave over the central tropical Atlantic appears unlikely in a day or two, but seems more favorable in a few days.

A tropical depression might form late this weekend or early next week as the system progresses in a west-northwestward to northwestward direction across the central and subtropical Atlantic, according to the NHC.

The chance of formation in the next 48 hours is 10 percent, while the chance of formation in the next seven days is 60 percent.
