New life after death clues emerge as survivors recall vivid encounters

Consciousness may persist after death, even if brain activity has ceased, according to a provocative new paper by a Finland-based researcher.

Pekka Rechardt’s argument draws on reports from people who survived cardiac arrest and described vivid near-death experiences. A previous review suggested that some of these experiences occurred while electrical activity in the brain was severely reduced or undetectable.

Rechardt revisited a 2025 review of near-death research by an international team, which found that electrical activity in the cortex—the brain’s outer layer—can vanish within 10 to 30 seconds after cardiac arrest.

The review’s authors, writing in the peer-reviewed journal International Review of Psychiatry, proposed that certain near-death experiences may take place during this period of suppression, when an electroencephalogram, or EEG, produces a flat reading.

Rechardt viewed these reports as possible evidence that consciousness may not rely entirely on measurable brain activity.

He focused on three recurring features of awareness: the feeling of being present, vivid sensory experiences and the ability to perceive events as a unified whole.

If those elements can remain intact without the brain activity usually linked to consciousness, he argued, then the physical destruction of the brain may not automatically mean the end of the mind.

‘This empirical consideration supports life after death being a credible option,’ he wrote.

Published in the Journal of Consciousness Studies, the paper expands on a theory of consciousness that Rechardt first outlined in 2023.

The earlier review, conducted by Bruno Angeli-Faez, Bruce Greyson and Pim van Lommel, also found that alpha and beta brain rhythms—described by the researchers as important to consciousness—disappear roughly 6.5 seconds after cardiac arrest.

Rechardt’s theory begins with the premise that consciousness cannot be fully explained as brain activity alone. From there, he considered how separate experiences become part of a single, coherent moment in everyday life.

He offered the example of a person walking on a sunny beach, taking in the landscape and warmth while simultaneously reflecting on philosophical ideas.

Those sensations and thoughts involve different areas of the brain, with signals taking time to pass between them. Despite that, the individual experiences everything as one continuous scene.

In Rechardt’s view, identifying the separate brain processes involved does not fully explain how they are combined into a unified perspective.

His proposed solution introduces a further spatial dimension beyond the familiar three dimensions of length, width and height. He suggests that this added dimension could allow information from different brain regions to be experienced together.

To explain the idea, he compared it with viewing a flat drawing from above, where its separate elements can be seen simultaneously as parts of a whole.

Near-death experiences, the researcher wrote, may offer ‘a glimpse of what awaits her or him’ when the bodily functions that sustain human life have ended

Using that comparison, he proposed that the three-dimensional brain might be linked to a conscious viewpoint existing in a fourth spatial dimension.

A further part of his argument examines the sense of being present in the ‘Now.’ People describing near-death experiences may recall past events or encounter unfamiliar scenes, yet they still report experiencing them within an immediate present.

Rechardt maintained that a description of physical events in space and time cannot, by itself, account for this deeply personal sense of presence.

He drew a similar distinction between measuring the brain’s response to a color and explaining the subjective experience of actually seeing that color.

These issues are central to the ‘hard problem’ of consciousness: the question of why physical processes produce subjective experience at all.

For Rechardt, the fact that near-death accounts preserve these familiar features of awareness supports considering a model of consciousness that extends beyond the brain. Still, the limitations of current explanations do not prove that his alternative theory is correct.

He applied his dimensional comparison to death by observing that destroying a painting does not destroy the person who was looking at it.

Under his proposed model, death could likewise sever the link between the brain and consciousness without eliminating the broader framework in which experience takes place.

Consciousness could then continue without receiving information through the body’s senses, he suggested.

That conclusion relies on the proposed framework existing independently of the brain, rather than being produced and sustained by neural activity.

Near-death experiences, he wrote, may offer ‘a glimpse of what awaits her or him’ after the bodily functions that support human life have stopped.
