Memorial Day weather is just mocking New Yorkers — gorgeous weather will follow gloomy holiday

Brace yourselves, beach lovers!

New Yorkers hoping for sun-soaked revelry this Memorial Day weekend might want to hold onto their swimsuits a little longer. Meteorologists warned on Thursday that the weather forecast resembles a cruel jest, with chilly and wet conditions expected to dampen the holiday spirit.

According to Dan DePodwin, AccuWeather’s Vice President of Forecast Operations, the city will bask in perfect beach weather just a tad late, with sunny skies predicted for the Tuesday following the holiday weekend. Unfortunately, the anticipated summer kickoff will be marred by rain and cooler temperatures, lingering in the 50s and 60s.

“It’s bookended by summer-like heat,” DePodwin remarked, describing the letdown of the upcoming three-day weekend. “Saturday is essentially a washout. It’s the coldest it gets around this time of year.”

Friday’s forecast includes overcast skies and a high of 65 degrees, leading into a rainy Saturday with temperatures peaking at just 56 degrees, DePodwin noted.

“Saturday is a complete soaker,” he commented. “It’s not an ideal day for outdoor activities.”

Mother Nature’s mean joke is forecast to continue into Sunday with more rain and a high of 60 degrees — but it could clear up by the afternoon, DePodwin said.

On Monday, Memorial Day itself will warm up slightly with a cloudy high of 70s degrees and a couple possible showers.

“Monday is likely the best day this weekend,” DePodwin said. “It will be better for barbecues than the beach.”

Once most folks return to work on Tuesday, however, the weather is forecast to heat up to a sunny high of nearly 80 degrees.

The patch of bad holiday weekend comes after a clear, dry stretch of summer-like heat earlier in the week.
