Enviable lifestyle of North Carolina power couple comes crashing down

Once considered the golden pair of Charlotte’s thriving craft beer industry, Justin Brigham and his stylish wife, Sarah Taylor, were an entrepreneurial force. Brigham, a driven local businessman, and Taylor, originally from Bermuda and a former jet ski guide, united their lives and ambitions across continents to create a shared dream.

Together, they transformed Sycamore Brewing from a fledgling venture into Charlotte’s leading local brewery, generating an estimated $20 million annually. The couple enjoyed life in a chic $1.5 million condo near downtown and frequently appeared in North Carolina’s business publications.

In 2023, their flagship taproom, a two-story marvel with a rooftop beer garden, became a staple of Charlotte’s vibrant live music scene, drawing in crowds every weekend and earning rave reviews.

Today, however, Brigham, age 44, finds himself at the Stanly County Detention Center with an astonishing $11.25 million bond. He faces nine felony charges, including rape, burglary, and soliciting a minor online.

Meanwhile, Taylor, 41, strives to maintain the business they painstakingly built, while caring for their ten-year-old daughter, Claire. She is also navigating divorce proceedings from the man she once saw as her partner in all things.

Their rapid and dramatic fall has left even those closest to them grappling with disbelief, as they attempt to understand the drastic changes in the lives of the couple they once admired.

In the small hours of December 10, 2025, Brigham allegedly crept into the rural home of a 13-year-old girl he had been grooming on Snapchat for two weeks.

According to the indictment, he was there to ‘commit lewd and lascivious acts’ on the child. Her parents were home. They discovered the intruder and they called 911.

They launched Sycamore Brewing in 2013 and were pulling in an estimated $20 million a year a decade later

When deputies arrived, they found one of Charlotte’s most celebrated entrepreneurs naked in a vehicle parked near the property.

It was as compromising and undignified a scene as it is possible to imagine for a man who had once been feted as a pillar of the local business community.

The girl’s mother, speaking to the Daily Mail and not being named to protect her family’s identity, said the night remains too raw and painful to revisit in any detail.

‘Our family just doesn’t want to be involved in this,’ said the distraught woman, a professional who described herself as still struggling to process what happened to her daughter.

‘The sooner it gets over, the better.’

Asked what she thought had motivated Brigham to allegedly invade her home in the dead of night, she was terse and to the point: ‘You’d have to interview him and ask him, right?’

According to the Stanly County Sheriff’s Office, Brigham began communicating with the teenager at the end of November 2025, using Snapchat to make contact with a child he knew to be underage.

On December 6, the girl sent him a photograph of herself ‘engaged in sexual activity,’ the indictment alleges. Four days later, it says, he allegedly drove to her family’s $750,000 rural home and broke in.

An altercation broke out when the family discovered him.

Brigham allegedly turned on the girl’s 21-year-old brother, attacking him in a manner described in court documents as causing ‘serious bodily injury’ and ‘extreme pain for an extended period of time.’

He allegedly ‘grabbed, squeezed, twisted, and pulled his penis and testicles.’

The family has still not recovered from the violence of that night, the girl’s mother told the Daily Mail.

She recalled a deeply disturbing encounter with the intruder but said she could not say whether he was intoxicated or what had possessed him to shatter the peace of their previously quiet home.

Detectives subsequently raided Brigham’s home and seized his electronic devices, which are still being forensically analyzed.

Sheriff Jeff Crisco has warned that additional charges may follow. His message to parents across North Carolina was blunt and simple: ‘Parents need to pay attention to their kids.’

Brigham raised eyebrows with a series of festive beer cans that raised eyebrows with their saucy depictions

Stanly County District Court Judge Tou Thai Vang acknowledged that Brigham had no prior related convictions, but remanded him in custody nonetheless, citing both the gravity of the offenses and the flight risk.

Brigham has yet to enter a plea. His attorney, Missy Owen, has said she is still reviewing the full body of evidence against her client and did not respond to the Daily Mail’s request for comment.

The couple’s story had begun, improbably enough, as a romance worthy of a movie.

Justin Brigham faces decades behind bars if convicted

Taylor met Brigham in her native Bermuda in the early 2000s, where he was working on a catamaran. She was a Jet Ski tour guide and a student of the prestigious Dalhousie University.

They bonded over live music and a shared passion for craft beer, married in 2008, and relocated to his home state of North Carolina to launch their brewery in 2013.

Within years, Sycamore was being tipped as Charlotte’s hottest startup.

By 2016, the year their daughter Claire was born, the company was already expanding rapidly, pushing into major supermarket chains and opening bigger brewhouses across the region.

But as Charlotte has combed through Brigham’s past for clues since his arrest, some have pointed to a pattern of provocative behavior that was hiding in plain sight for years.

In 2019, Sycamore released seasonal beer cans featuring pixelated reindeer in sexually suggestive poses – imagery that drew formal scrutiny from North Carolina alcohol regulators for indecency.

In subsequent holiday seasons, the brewery doubled down, incorporating elves with adult toys and other explicit double-entendre imagery as part of what had become a festive tradition at the company.

At the time, it was written off as edgy, attention-grabbing marketing from an ambitious businessman who liked to push boundaries. After the arrest, the reaction was rather different.

One online commentator wrote simply that the ‘lewd can art makes sense now.’

Others who knew Brigham in Charlotte’s close-knit brewing community described him as aggressive and combative – a man who crossed swords with competitors in ways that struck some as unnecessary and mean-spirited.

Insiders say Taylor was completely blindsided. She had seemingly been oblivious to whatever had allegedly been unfolding in her husband’s private life.

She moved with remarkable speed. In a public statement, she called the charges ‘horrific’ and wasted no time in assuming full control of the company.

In January 2026, she filed for divorce, citing Brigham’s ‘illicit sexual behavior’ and requesting a lump-sum child support payment on the grounds that her husband was ‘indefinitely incarcerated’ and unlikely to be buying groceries any time soon.

As the fallout spread, supermarket chains including Food Lion, Lowes Foods and Publix yanked Sycamore products from their shelves. Corporate partners quietly severed ties.

Taylor shuttered the flagship South End taproom and set about trying to salvage something from the wreckage.

The brewery was rebranded as Club West Brewing and reopened in March under the ownership of Brad Bergman, a long-time senior executive at the company.

But not everyone in Charlotte is buying it. Taylor remains listed as a managing member on company paperwork, and skeptics have dismissed the rebranding as little more than a ‘PR trick.’

Some have vowed publicly that they will never touch the beer again regardless of what it is called.

Brigham remains behind bars, awaiting his next court hearing in July. The girl’s family waits, too – hoping, in the mother’s own words, that it will simply be over soon.

And the city that once raised a glass to Charlotte’s golden brewing couple is still trying to understand how it all fell apart so completely, so quickly, and so horribly.
