Vivek Ramaswamy's rally blasted by neighbors over his Amy Acton ad

Vivek Ramaswamy’s Republican campaign stop in Ohio took an uncomfortable turn Friday night when demonstrators supporting his political rival staged a protest from the neighboring property.

The billionaire candidate for governor was in Circleville as part of a statewide GOP bus tour, appearing alongside other Republicans at a small outdoor gathering held on the deck of a private home.

As Ramaswamy’s supporters applauded and displayed campaign signs, a competing message was unfolding only a few feet away across the backyard fence.

Supporters of Democratic candidate Dr. Amy Acton gathered next door, carrying signs condemning a controversial attack ad that features Acton’s estranged mother.

The unusual scene created a political split screen in an increasingly heated Ohio governor’s race: Republicans listened from one backyard while Democrats voiced their opposition from the neighboring property.

One protester lifted a blue “Acton” sign above her head, while others stood near signs supporting Republican candidates taking part in the bus tour.

A handwritten message attached to the neighboring home delivered perhaps the sharpest criticism, appearing deliberately positioned so it could be seen by those attending the rally.

“Dear Vivek, So we are clear, CHILD ABUSE IS NOT OK!” the sign read, referencing the controversy over Ramaswamy’s campaign advertisement.

The message remained plainly visible throughout the Republican event.

Photos from the gathering underscored how intimate the setting was. Instead of a convention center or large auditorium, the campaign event took place on a compact residential deck decorated with American flags and red, white and blue bunting.

Supporters packed around the makeshift stage, many holding up their phones as Ramaswamy spoke into a handheld microphone.

Journalist Brennan Leach drew attention to the protest after posting photographs on X. “Vivek Ramaswamy is holding an event for the Ohio GOP ticket at a private home in Circleville, OH tonight,” Leach wrote.

“The neighbors are Amy Acton supporters,” Leach added.

The confrontation along the property line reflected the broader dispute now surrounding Ramaswamy’s gubernatorial campaign.

The controversy centers on a reported $4 million advertising campaign featuring Donna Arthur, the estranged mother of Ramaswamy’s Democratic opponent. Arthur has reportedly been separated from her daughter for almost 50 years.

In the 60-second commercial, Arthur accuses Acton of being dishonest, calling her daughter “a liar” and saying she “needs help.”

The advertisement has provoked criticism from both Democrats and Republicans because of the traumatic circumstances surrounding the mother and daughter’s separation.

Acton, Ohio’s former state health director, has spoken publicly about experiencing homelessness and abuse during her childhood.

According to police, her stepfather, Cledith Arthur, was arrested and charged with raping her when she was 12 years old.

The abuse occurred between December 1976 and April 1978, with Acton’s biological father reporting the allegations to authorities.

Cledith Arthur pleaded not guilty and was indicted by a grand jury in September 1978, but failed to appear at a subsequent court hearing. He remained a fugitive until at least 1981 and has since died.

Acton has said she has not seen her mother since 1978, making Arthur’s appearance in the Republican attack advertisement particularly controversial.

The controversy has also exposed disagreements among Ohio’s most prominent Republicans, several of whom have publicly urged Ramaswamy to withdraw the commercial.

Republican Gov. Mike DeWine, who has endorsed Ramaswamy, described the advertisement as ‘deeply, deeply troubling’ and called for it to be taken off the air.

By Friday, all five living former full-term Ohio governors, including three Republicans, had criticized the advertisement, but Ramaswamy has refused to abandon the campaign.

Ohio Neighbors Blast Vivek Ramaswamy Rally Over Amy Acton Ad

‘I love my Jeep but it’s time to hit the road on our RV!,’ Dr. Amy Acton wrote on her Instagram

Speaking at an earlier stop in suburban Cleveland on Friday, he accused Democrats and the media of misrepresenting the advertisement.

‘The irony is they’re lying about an ad that is about lying,’ he told supporters. ‘They’re changing the subject because they don’t want to answer for their own failures.’

President Donald Trump has also encouraged Ramaswamy to continue airing the commercial.

At a rally in Iowa on Thursday, Trump revealed that the Republican candidate had contacted him for advice about the controversy.

‘You’ve got to ride with it,’ Trump recalled telling him.

Acton, meanwhile, has accused her opponent of exploiting the suffering she endured as a child.

‘I won’t normalize somebody who has said that my childhood is just something I’m complaining about,’ she told Spectrum News.
