PALM BAY, Fla. – Authorities have apprehended a 61-year-old man from Palm Bay in a shocking child abuse case involving two young victims. The charges include confining one child to a room for days and subjecting another to repeated physical assaults.

Police were called to a home on Emerson Drive on Tuesday following a report of a suicide threat. During their investigation, they uncovered allegations from a juvenile victim who claimed Joseph Anthony Mazzella had confined him in a room for extended stretches—sometimes lasting as long as a week—providing only a bucket for sanitation purposes.

According to the police report, the child endured confinement with minimal bathroom access and received food while being locked away.

The report also detailed the plight of a second juvenile victim who suffered continual physical abuse. Mazzella confessed to hitting this child on numerous occasions, explaining to officers that the child could endure such treatment, likening him to a resilient Mike Tyson who could withstand a punch without much visible effect.

The first victim recounted incidents of being punched, slapped, and having items hurled at him by Mazzella and another adult. He described Mazzella throwing a clothes rack at him and hitting him in the head and torso multiple times. Additionally, the second child bore a faint red mark on his hand, which was consistent with being struck by a plastic jar, as noted in the arrest report.

Mazzella admitted to locking the first child in a room as a form of punishment, restricting his freedom, police reported. He also acknowledged hitting the children in moments of anger, prompted by perceived misbehavior and dishonesty, according to the report.

Officers observed redness on the first victim’s chest and faint marks on the second child’s hand. Interviews with the children and a school vice principal confirmed consistent accounts of abuse, police said.

Mazzella was charged with aggravated child abuse and was taken into custody, appearing in a Brevard County Circuit Court on Wednesday.

An arraignment is scheduled for Feb. 12.
