Parent Forces Way Into California School Bus in Chaotic Scene

A tense school bus dispute in California spiraled into chaos when an enraged parent allegedly smashed part of the vehicle as frightened children climbed out through its windows after the driver refused to let them leave.

Video from the Calaveras Unified school bus captured the disorder Monday, showing a routine trip home unraveling into a nearly hour-long confrontation involving students, parents and law enforcement.

Footage showed children squeezing through open bus windows while anxious and increasingly upset parents gathered outside. At one point, an adult was seen climbing in through a window to confront the driver directly.

The standoff ended after sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene, with one parent taken into custody for allegedly breaking the glass on the bus door.

According to accounts from the scene, the dramatic episode began after a student tried to climb out of a window while the bus was stopped.

The driver then instructed the remaining children to stay seated and shut the windows while they waited for law enforcement, a 12-year-old student told KCRA3.

“Everybody was screaming and stuff because they were excited to get off the bus,” the student said, describing the panic and confusion inside the vehicle.

The child also said another student managed to climb out through a window after the bus had come to a stop.

‘That’s when the bus driver was like, “Sit down, roll up the windows,”‘ the child explained.

According to the student, the driver then told the youngsters that nobody else would be getting off until the police arrived.

Parents who spoke with KCRA 3 said the children remained aboard the stationary bus for about an hour as word of the escalating situation spread.

Some of the youngsters began calling their parents.

Among them was the son of Nichole Wellington, who said her child was frightened by what was happening.

Wellington immediately headed to the bus and demanded that the driver hand over her son.

‘I went right to the door, and I was like, “Dude, open the door. Let me have my kid.” And he’s like, “I’m not doing that,”‘ she said.

With the doors remaining shut, Wellington gave permission for her son to climb through one of the bus windows while she waited outside.

Video from the scene showed some children climbing through the windows amid the chaos.

Wellington believes the situation should never have reached that point.

‘If he would have handled that situation and gave the parents their kids that were there. I think it probably would have went a little bit differently than it did,’ she said.

‘I do feel that maybe that bus driver, especially when he’s driving, should not have to deal with all those kids by himself,’ Wellington suggested.

But not every parent who arrived at the scene agreed that getting the children off the bus was the right response.

Rebecca Glover had two children aboard and took precisely the opposite approach.

Rather than telling them to climb out, she instructed both to remain seated and wait for the situation to be resolved.

Glover said she believed the driver was attempting to keep everybody aboard safe rather than focusing on the demands of individual parents.

‘There was not just one child they had to think of,’ she said. ‘They had to think of every single child on that bus at that time.

‘Parents are now sending their children to school to be parented instead of parenting their children at home, and that is a concern,’ Glover said.

The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to deal with a disturbance involving a parent and the driver.

‘During the incident, the parent struck the bus door, breaking the glass,’ the sheriff’s office said.

‘The parent was ultimately taken into custody at the School District’s request for vandalism.’

Authorities have not named the parent who was arrested.
