A 32-year-old man who was shot by Houston police last week had a previous criminal record in Nevada involving charges related to children.

Jacques Bassey faced serious charges in Clark County, Nevada, where authorities accused him of 13 offenses involving minors. These charges included human trafficking, multiple counts of sexual assault on a child, and aggravated kidnapping, as reported by FOX 26 Houston.

In October 2024, Bassey accepted a plea deal, admitting guilt to a charge of sexual seduction. Despite this, a judge in Clark County allowed him to remain free until his sentencing, scheduled for January 2025.

Shortly after agreeing to the plea, Bassey fled to Houston instead of awaiting his sentencing.

While in Houston last year, Bassey was apprehended on suspicion of committing theft against elderly individuals. Earlier this month, during a routine traffic stop on the 5000 block of Antoine Drive, he allegedly fired at Houston police officers.

“He believed he was wanted and that’s why he decided to engage in a shootout with officers,” stated Douglas Griffith, President of the Houston Police Officers Union.

Following a high-speed chase, Bassey allegedly exited his vehicle and fled down a sidewalk with a firearm, a witness told KHOU.

Security footage showed the suspect hiding behind vehicles as he opened fire on two officers, who were not injured. The officers returned fire and shot Bassey, who still had on his GPS monitor from the Nevada case.

First responders took him to an area hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

“We’ve seen this play out in Harris County multiple times. Only this time, it happens in Nevada, but it came back to haunt us in Houston,” Andy Kahan, with Houston Crime Stoppers, told FOX 26.

According to Houston PD, authorities charged with Bassey with two counts of attempted capital murder of a police officer and evading arrest, following the incident.
