An investigation is underway in Mississippi after a college student’s body was reportedly found hanging from a tree on Monday.
The death of Demartravion Reed is being investigated as a suicide, according to Michael L. Peeler, the police chief at Delta State University. The Clarion Ledger revealed that Reed, aged 21, was discovered hanging from a tree at the heart of the campus, located behind the pickleball courts.
Reed’s mother conveyed to WREG that their last conversation was on Friday, during which her son expressed enthusiasm for starting school. His tragic death happened amidst the university’s centennial celebrations, leading to their cancellation.
The Bolivar County Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy, though Peeler said foul play is not suspected in his death.
Peeler assured, per WHBQ, “I just want to affirm that this is a safe environment. Delta State University is a wonderful place. It’s a profound loss that our campus is facing.”
The university grounds were closed following the discovery of Reed’s body, although Peeler clarified that no lockdown was put in place. All classes scheduled for Monday were canceled, and the timeline for their resumption remains uncertain.
Dr. Daniel Ennis, the University President, informed WREG, “There is no indication of any threat to the campus, nor any signs that it is unsafe, so we anticipate returning to normal activities as soon as feasible.”
