Batman actor and uncle of famed director Christopher Nolan dead at 87

Veteran actor John Nolan, celebrated for his memorable performances in “Batman Begins” and the TV series “Person of Interest,” has died at the age of 87. His passing was reported on Saturday by the Stratford-upon-Avon Herald.

The details surrounding his cause of death remain undisclosed at this time.

John Nolan played an influential role in the careers of his nephews, the acclaimed filmmakers Christopher and Jonathan Nolan. His contributions to their projects were significant, both as a mentor and a talented actor.

Among Nolan’s most iconic roles was his portrayal of Douglas Fredericks, a member of the Wayne Enterprises board, in both “Batman Begins” (2005) and “The Dark Knight Rises” (2012), under the direction of Christopher Nolan.

His collaborations with Jonathan Nolan were equally notable, with appearances in the 1998 thriller “Following” and the critically acclaimed 2017 war film “Dunkirk.”

He also worked closely with Jonathan, appearing in the 1998 thriller Following and in the 2017 war epic Dunkirk.

In television, Nolan was featured prominently in Person Of Interest, created by Jonathan. 

He played former MI6 agent John Greer in the show’s second season and continued his involvement behind the scenes throughout its run.

A graduate of London’s prestigious Drama Centre, Nolan was among the first students to attend. 

His early career saw him playing Romeo at the Richmond Theatre, which led to a two-year stint with the Royal Shakespeare Company. 

His stage credits also included performances in productions such as Bequest To The Nation, Terror, and The World Is Full Of Married Men, along with appearances in the TV series General Hospital and Enemy At The Door.

Born on May 22, 1938, Nolan was the younger brother of Brendan Nolan, father to Christopher and Jonathan Nolan. 

Over the years, he worked extensively in theatre, including a memorable time with the Royal Court Company and a series of key roles at the Royal Shakespeare Company.

In the early 1970s, Nolan appeared in the BBC environmental drama Doomwatch, portraying scientist Geoff Hardcastle for its first two seasons.

His television career also saw him playing Nick Faunt in the 1973 miniseries Shabby Tiger. 

In addition, he co-wrote and starred in a trilogy based on Dostoyevsky for the Bristol New Vic company during 1980-81. 

Nolan’s film credits included Bequest To The Nation (1973), Terror (1978), and The World Is Full Of Married Men (1979), while his TV credits spanned shows like The Prisoner, The Sweeney and Silent Witness. 

In 2013, Nolan joined the cast of Person Of Interest.

His role spanned 28 episodes throughout the show’s five-season run.

Nolan is survived by his wife, actress Kim Hartman, known for Grange Hill and ‘Allo ‘Allo! 

He also leaves behind their children, Miranda and Tom, grandchildren Dylan and Kara, and his nephews.
