Search Ends in Tragedy: Missing Hiker Found Dead in Auburn

The search for a 24-year-old hiker who disappeared in Placer County’s rugged American Canyon ended in heartbreak Tuesday, when crews located him deceased in the remote terrain.

Ian Roberts, 24, had driven to the rural river canyon Friday for what appeared to be a solo hike. When he failed to return, authorities launched an extensive search effort that brought in emergency personnel and specialized teams from across California.

Search crews found Roberts’ body on Tuesday, marking the third day of the operation.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share Ian Roberts was located deceased today, August 25,” Elise Soviar, a spokeswoman for the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, said in a statement provided to the California Post.

Soviar said investigators believe Roberts “slipped and fell down a steep embankment,” adding that there is currently no evidence suggesting foul play.

The large-scale search included both land and water teams from Napa, Santa Clara, Marin and Sacramento counties, working alongside Placer County crews and other responding agencies.

Known for its dramatic scenery, the American River Canyon region cuts through the western Sierra Nevada foothills, where steep gorges shaped by the American River’s three forks stretch from the Sierra to Folsom Lake.

Roberts, described as an experienced hiker, is believed to have set out for a challenging trek after parking at Overlook Park in Auburn, a popular access point for several canyon trails.

The location where Roberts was found is in the Auburn State Recreation area and within Auburn City limits, said Soviar. The Auburn Police Department investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
