Sherlock Holmes actor left estate of £78,000 following his death at 91

Actor David Burke, best known for playing Dr Watson in the television adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, left an estate valued at £77,912 when he died aged 91.

The performer also appeared in Coronation Street in two separate roles: first as a schoolmaster at Bessie Street School in 1963, and later as factory works manager Jack Benjamin in 1966.

Burke died on May 10, four months ago. He is survived by his wife, fellow actor Anna Calder-Marshall, and their only son, Tom Burke.

He rose to prominence as Sherlock Holmes’s loyal companion in the 1980s series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, appearing opposite Jeremy Brett, who played both the celebrated detective and Watson’s close friend.

Burke’s interpretation helped reshape Dr Watson’s image. Rather than portraying him as a foolish figure, the series presented Watson as a capable and respected partner—an approach that influenced later versions of the character, including Martin Freeman’s performance opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in the BBC drama Sherlock.

Details made public yesterday showed that Burke left his estate to Anna, 79, whom he married in 1971, 55 years before his death.

The High Court of Justice issued the Grant of Probate on Monday, naming his wife and son as the executors of his will.

His gross UK estate was valued at £84,407. After deductions, the net figure stood at £77,912.

Burke, who also appeared in the long-running television drama Heartbeat, signed his will on September 29, 2011.

Anna Calder-Marshall has appeared in programmes including Inspector Morse, Midsomer Murders and Agatha Christie’s Poirot. Their son Tom is 45 and is the couple’s only child.

Born in Liverpool, Burke won an Oxford scholarship in the 1950s to study classics. At the time, he hoped to follow in the footsteps of acting legend Laurence Olivier.

He later trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art after winning his place through an audition inspired by his time working as a labourer on the M1. His career subsequently spanned television, radio and the stage.

Among his notable stage roles was Kent in a National Theatre production of King Lear, in which he appeared alongside Ian Holm, the actor famed for playing Bilbo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings.

Critics praised Burke’s performance, describing it at the time as “subtle, studied and unobtrusive”.

His screen credits also included Midsomer Murders, while he worked with The Good Life star Felicity Kendal in The Woodlanders.

Burke made his Coronation Street appearances between 1963 and 1966.

Following his father into the profession, Tom Burke built his own acting career, playing Athos in the BBC series The Musketeers and detective Cormoran Strike in Strike.

He also appeared opposite Steve Coogan in the Netflix series Legends, which premiered earlier this month.

Burke reportedly declined to appear in a second series of the show in 1985 having felt ‘terribly guilty’ about leaving his family at home while filming the 13 episodes in Manchester.

In an interview with The Times, Tom said he felt ‘guilty’ as he got older at the prospect his father had ‘given up this brilliant opportunity’ for him.

When he asked his father about it, Burke told his son: ‘It was my decision.

‘I didn’t just want to work. I also wanted to be your dad.

‘On top of that, I was getting bored of saying, “Good heavens, Holmes”.’
