Artist went to bed to sleep and woke up PARALYZED from the waist down

A gifted tattoo artist found herself paralyzed after an unexpected and rare spinal cord infection developed seemingly overnight.

Katie Martin, the artist in question, was urgently taken to a hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, earlier in March. It was there that doctors discovered a sudden and severe spinal cord infection, which led to a serious bone infection. This dire situation necessitated immediate surgery, during which surgeons had to remove two and a half discs from her spine.

Four months after the incident, Martin shared with KETV that the origins of the spinal infection remain a mystery to her doctors. The abruptness of her condition left her and her medical team puzzled about how it developed so swiftly.

Martin first disclosed her paralysis to the public in a heartfelt Instagram post dated March 3. In her message, she expressed gratitude to her followers for their continued support of her work but announced that she had to temporarily shut down her artistic pursuits due to the unexpected health crisis.

Despite the severity of her condition, Martin conveyed optimism about her recovery. She assured her followers that she anticipates a swift and positive recovery, promising to return to her art and share her creations as soon as possible. Her resilient spirit shines through as she vows to “be back soon.”

‘I anticipate having a quick and positive recovery, and will be back to creating and sharing my art here shortly,’ she continued, vowing to ‘be back soon.’

When she was later diagnosed with a spinal cord infection, she told her more than 5,800 followers that she was ‘spending time in the ICU, and the doctors are working diligently to get me healed.

‘I know it will be a long road ahead of rehabilitation, and I will do my best to keep everyone updated as this new life journey progresses,’ she wrote on March 5.

Despite the grim news, Martin said she was ‘genuinely feeling very optimistic, and think that this has a divine purpose in my life and is for a reason.’

In a follow-up post just three days later, Martin announced she had been discharged from the ICU, but would remain in the hospital for up to one month before moving to a spinal rehabilitation center.

‘I’m in very good spirits and am extremely motivated and determined to get my body grooving again,’ she wrote at the time.

As Martin’s road to recovery then continued, many local businesses announced they were holding fundraisers for her.

The business owners and friends said she had made a permanent mark on the city through her art, and they were now trying to pay it forward after her illness took away her ability to create tattoos and art.

One bar posted on social media that it was offering shots at its four locations across Omaha with the proceeds going to Martin’s recovery expenses in May, while other businesses held a fundraiser on Sunday featuring designs inspired by Martin’s artwork, along with live music, face painting and food.

By the end of Sunday, the business had raised over $6,000 for Martin’s recovery.

‘I couldn’t imagine doing this without my family, my community,’ Martin said from the fundraiser, where she saw people wearing her designs on t-shirts.

‘The support system has just like kept me thriving and alive.’

With the community’s support, she said she has made some strides in her recovery.

‘I feel good, you know, taking my wins as they come,’ she told KETV.

‘So I can move my fingers now. I just started wiggling my toes, which is an astronomical achievement at this point. I can wiggle my knees a little bit. So I’m on a mission to walk again and get through this and kind of see why all this happened.’

But, she said, ‘as long as I’m doing art, I’m going to be happy and we’ll feel excited about all of it.’
