A Florida woman with a problematic driving history is now facing numerous charges following a crash in which she drove her Mercedes-Benz into a vehicle holding four passengers, resulting in one fatality. Authorities report that she attempted to flee the scene upon her boyfriend’s advice.

Beverly Yvonne Slaughter, 25, is charged with 14 offenses, including vehicular homicide, fleeing a crash scene resulting in death, and operating a vehicle with a suspended license causing death. The accident took place around 1 a.m. on April 29 at the intersection of West Sunrise Boulevard and NW 24th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale, according to an arrest affidavit.

Slaughter was operating a 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class at high speed when she entered the intersection of Sunrise Boulevard just as a Nissan Altima was turning left under a green signal. Her vehicle collided with the Altima. Post-crash footage purportedly captures Slaughter fleeing from her car.

A Fort Lauderdale police officer reached the scene and noticed Slaughter attempting a discreet walk behind a McDonald’s, as described in the affidavit. The officer quickly apprehended her. When questioned about her attempt to leave, Slaughter reportedly stated it was because her boyfriend advised her to escape, as noted by the police.

Of the Altima’s passengers, two sustained serious injuries and were transported to a hospital. Sadly, one succumbed to her injuries on May 2 after being removed from life support.

During Slaughter’s court appearance on Wednesday, prosecutors submitted a bond motion advocating for her continued detention, citing her driving history. Her license has been revoked since 2021, and she has a prior conviction for driving without a license. In 2023, she was also apprehended on charges of driving under the influence, fleeing from law enforcement, and reckless driving.

Prosecutors say she has shown a “disregard for the safety of the community” and “there are no conditions of release reasonably sufficient to protect the community from risk of physical harm to person.”

A judge agreed and ordered her to be held in the Broward County Jail without bond. Her next court date is scheduled for Friday.
