A man has died following a confrontation with NSW Police on Sydney’s northern beaches this morning.

Police were attending reports of a domestic incident around 2am at a home in Newport before the confrontation took place.

Officers from Northern Beaches Police Area Command attempted to speak with a 39-year-old man and during the course of this encounter they discharged their firearms.

The man sustained critical injuries and died at the scene.

An investigation into the incident is underway. This will also be subject to an independent review.
