In a heartwarming tale of bravery and community spirit, a group of children in Blackford County, Indiana, is being celebrated for their quick thinking that saved their cherished neighbor from a house fire.

For over a decade, Nina Osgood has been a steadfast guardian for five children, stepping in as a surrogate caretaker while their mother, Keisha Gerber, manages long shifts at work. The bond they’ve built is more than just neighborly; it’s familial.

“She’s amazing,” Gerber shared with Nexstar’s WANE. “That lady would give the shirt off her back… She does everything for me and my kids.”

This deep connection was put to the test earlier this month when 9-year-old Brenna Fields noticed smoke and bright flames emerging from Nina’s window. Without hesitation, Brenna, along with her 11-year-old brother Reese and their 8-year-old cousin Grant Cosner, sprang into action to rescue Osgood from the perilous situation.

Earlier this month, Brenna Fields, 9, saw smoke and bright flames rising from Osgood’s window.

Brenna; her 11-year-old brother Reese, and 8-year-old cousin Grant Cosner rushed to rescue Osgood.

Keshia Gerber shared the below photos with WANE:

Without a second thought, they entered through Osgood’s back door, and shook her awake.

“It was black smoke rolling in when Nina was coming out, so she was like coughing,” said Reese.

“They say, about 15 more minutes, I’d be dead. So they was little heroes,” said Osgood of the kids. She did, however, lose two of her dogs in the fire.

With the help of the family and the rest of the Blackford County community, Osgood has since been able to find a new home.
