Two Aiken men sentenced to two years in prison for defrauding 88-year-old woman in will scheme

AIKEN, S.C. () – Two Aiken man have been sentenced to two years in prison for conspiracy to commit bank fraud.

The United States Department of Justice District of South Carolina’s Office has reported on a will that was signed by an 88-year-old woman in Aiken. This will indicated that her entire estate, valued at around $20 million, was to be left to Thomas Allen Bateman, 51, also from Aiken. Meanwhile, Cody Lee Anderson, 38, another resident of Aiken, was named as the personal representative and was set to receive a payment of $1 million.

However, authorities have raised concerns during their investigation about the woman’s mental capacity at the time the will was executed, suggesting she may not have been capable of making an informed decision about how her assets should be distributed.

Both Anderson and Bateman were sentenced to 2 years imprisonment followed by a three-year term of court-ordered supervision.
