Amid news of their breakup last month, Katy Perry had to witness her former fiancé enjoying his bachelor life on a vacation in Italy.

At the time, she was pictured looking downcast some 8,000 miles away in Australia as she pushed on with her gruelling world tour.

But now it’s Perry’s turn to have her moment, and that moment appears to be an intimate dinner date with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The unexpected duo caused a social media frenzy on Monday after being seen chatting animatedly at a restaurant in Montreal, Canada, especially since both Perry, 40, and Trudeau, 53, recently experienced high-profile breakups.

The politician surprised many when he revealed his separation from his wife of almost 20 years, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, in 2023, while Perry is adjusting to her recent split from Orlando Bloom earlier this year.

Despite their seemingly intimate meeting, a source told the Daily Mail that those who know the singer don’t think the rendezvous was anything substantial.

The unusual pairing sent social media into a frenzy, particularly since Perry, 40, recently had a highly publicized breakup with Orlando Bloom (pictured in March).

They explained that Perry ‘usually wears her heart on her sleeve’ so if a new romance was brewing, her pals would have heard about it. 

‘As of right now, Katy and Justin are treating their get together as just that, a get together,’ our insider said.

‘She hasn’t mentioned it being anything more, and she usually is very open, so if something was occurring, she’d tell her close friends. But for now, it is nothing beyond friendship.’

The source added that she’s still grappling with her split from Bloom, 48, with whom she has four-year-old daughter Daisy.

‘She isn’t ready to start dating anyone right now, she has to continue to focus on her healing from separating from Orlando,’ they continued.

‘Could that change? Obviously, but the ball is in Katy’s court right now. No relationship so far.’

A second insider reiterated that Perry and Trudeau’s meetup was ‘just a hangout’ and not something romantic… yet.

‘They met at an event and they have had some good conversations,’ they said. ‘They text each other, it seems to be very friendly and nothing more at the moment.

‘It could develop, of course, but it’s not anything more than two single people who had dinner together and like to talk.’

They added that it’s too soon after her split from Bloom to think about seriously dating anyone. 

‘She literally just became single five minutes ago and they haven’t even separated all of their stuff yet,’ the source said. ‘She’s not going to fall in love with someone new so quickly.’

In a video obtained by the Daily Mail, Perry and Trudeau were seen leaning over a table as they dined together at the city’s Le Violon restaurant.

A smiling Perry, who is currently on the Canadian leg of her Lifetimes Tour, was seen gesturing as Trudeau listened intently. 

It has been a tough few months for both of the stars – with Perry weathering her split from Bloom, a poorly received album – 143 – and her much derided Blue Origin space flight. 

Meanwhile, Trudeau is navigating life outside of 24 Sussex after his resignation in January following a dramatic fall from grace.

Sophie was a childhood friend and classmate of Trudeau’s older brother Michel, who died in an avalanche in 1998, aged 23.

They began dating in 2003 after reconnecting as adults and were engaged a short time afterwards.

Perry and Bloom first got together in 2016 and got engaged on Valentine’s Day 2019. 

Split speculation swirled for months before the pair finally confirmed the end of their romance last month.

At the time, a rep said: ‘Orlando and Katy have been shifting their relationship over the past many months to focus on co-parenting. 

‘They will continue to be seen together as a family, as their shared priority is – and always will be – raising their daughter with love, stability, and mutual respect.’

Perry was left ‘disappointed and sad’ by his behavior, according to a source who told the Daily Mail at the time: ‘It’s hurtful and annoying. If he’s going to behave like an acting-up adolescent, that’s on him. She’s going to continue to work and take care of Daisy.

‘Katy knows that he’s free to do whatever the hell he wants to do, she hoped he’d do it a little more discreetly and thoughtfully. So she’s disappointed and sad.’ 

Last month, People magazine claimed Perry’s poorly performing album 143 had caused ‘tension’ in her relationship with her fiancé.

The singer’s seventh studio album was released in September 2024 and received a largely negative response from fans and critics alike, who claimed the record sounds as if it was ‘generated through AI.’

Perry’s career continued to suffer from her 11-minute space flight which saw her join Gayle King and Lauren Sanchez for the all-female trip in April – with Bloom said to have found the intergalactic mission ‘cringe’ and ’embarrassing.’

Perry was seen floating inside the capsule holding a daisy in a nod to her daughter, Daisy. 

She was fiercely ridiculed upon landing back to Earth and emerging with the flower in hand which she held to the sky before dropping to her knees and kissing the ground, with people online branding her as ‘tone deaf’ and ‘dramatic’ for her actions.
