Tori Spelling calls out film director who 'hated' her

Tori Spelling will always be closely tied to Beverly Hills, 90210, but one of her lesser-known screen appearances is so buried that her name does not appear in the credits at all: the 2003 sci-fi comedy Evil Alien Conquerors.

Speaking on Stephen Baldwin’s One Bad Movie podcast, the 53-year-old actress said the project turned into the most miserable filming experience of her career — to the point that she asked for her credit to be removed.

Spelling told Baldwin that tensions with the film’s writer-director, Chris Matheson, 67, left her feeling deeply uncomfortable on set, saying she believed he “hated” her.

Evil Alien Conquerors starred Diedrich Bader and Chris Parnell as a pair of bumbling extraterrestrials sent to Earth with an absurdly brutal deadline: decapitate the entire human race within two and a half days or be wiped out by a towering 100-foot giant.

Spelling, who recently spoke about her strained relationship with former podcast partner and Beverly Hills, 90210 co-star Jennie Garth, said she landed the part of an alien disguised as a human without having to audition — a role made memorable by some intentionally bizarre physical details.

“It was a straight offer, and I got it, and they’re like, ‘It’s a comedy!’” she remembered of how the movie was pitched to her.

‘All I know is I had a big furry unibrow and furry feet, and I was one of the girlfriends, and it was just I was so excited.’

After 10 years of playing ultimate goody-goody Donna Martin in Beverly Hills, 90210, the daughter of TV mogul Aaron Spelling relished some comedic relief.

But according to Spelling, Matheson was constantly critical of her performance.

‘It could be a scene with me and one other actor or a scene with like 20 of us… By the end I knew he’d go through the first take, and then he’d be like “Cut!” And I’m like, “Wait for it,” and he’d be like, “Tori…”‘ she described.

‘Every time! He would say it out loud across all the other actors and everyone in the room and I’d be shuddering.’

It got to the point where Spelling just wished to be ‘fired.’

‘I was like, “Just fire me and recast. This is so hard on me,”‘ she said. ‘I went to set every day just like a puddle of… I don’t know. I watched it. I’m fine in it, but I’m like, “Oh, I wish I had done more with it.”‘

She added: ‘It was a comedy. It was just like a goofy comedy. He just didn’t like me. And I’m like, “That’s okay.”‘

Spelling told the podcast host, who is the youngest brother of Alec Baldwin, that she asked to have her name removed from the credits.

‘So if you look it up, it doesn’t credit me,’ she said.

When asked about Spelling’s recollections, Matheson told People: ‘I’m sorry she felt that way. I like Tori personally. I just think we have some different ideas about comedy.’

Spelling’s enlightening story comes on the heels of her departure from the 90210MG rewatch podcast in late July. She had co-hosted the show alongside Jennie Garth and producer Amy Sugarman since 2020.

During a livestream with former co-star Brian Austin Green, the mother-of-five stated she wanted to take time to ‘assess, really reflect’ and speak her truth thoughtfully rather than being reactive.

Garth and Sugarman, meanwhile, confirmed the move was ‘100 percent her decision.’
