Toyota has issued a major recall affecting more than half a million Camry models in the US after discovering a dashboard-related defect that could stop the vehicles’ turn signals from working properly.

The automaker is recalling roughly 655,000 Camrys globally, with 508,354 of them in the United States covering 2025 and 2026 model-year Camry Hybrids, according to filings submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The issue is linked to vehicles equipped with a 7-inch combination meter, which may fail to show any information when the car is started.

While a blank display may appear at first to be a simple software hiccup, regulators say the potential safety implications are significant.

If the screen does not activate, the Camry’s turn signals and hazard lights may also stop functioning. Some audible alerts can be affected as well, including seat belt reminders and the warning chime that sounds when a key is left inside the vehicle.

The NHTSA said the defect could raise the risk of a crash, both because drivers may miss critical warnings and because other motorists may not be able to see when the Camry is turning or signaling a hazard.

The recall applies only to Camry versions fitted with the smaller 7-inch driver display. XLE and XSE trims, which come with a larger 12.3-inch display, are not part of this specific recall.

Toyota said the affected vehicles were built between December 2023 and July 2026 at its manufacturing facilities in the US, Japan and Thailand.

A wider global recall covers markets including North America, the Middle East and Asia. Toyota says the problem stems from the software controlling the instrument cluster.

In certain circumstances, the 7-inch display can be blank when the car is started, potentially taking the associated indicators and warning sounds with it. The fix is relatively straightforward: Toyota dealers will provide a software update free of charge.

In the US, owner notification letters are scheduled to start arriving on September 21, with Toyota expecting to complete the mailing by early October.

Drivers do not have to wait for a letter to find out whether their vehicle is affected. Toyota and the NHTSA offer online recall checkers where owners can enter their vehicle identification number.

The latest Camry recall comes after a string of recent Toyota safety campaigns involving displays and other technology.

In September 2025, Toyota recalled approximately 591,000 vehicles in the US because a 12.3-inch instrument-panel display could go blank at startup.

The affected vehicles included the Toyota Camry, RAV4, Venza, Crown, Grand Highlander, Tacoma and 4Runner, among others, as well as several Lexus models.

Toyota said the blank display could prevent drivers from seeing certain malfunction indicators, increasing the risk of a crash or injury. Dealers were instructed to update the software or replace the instrument cluster where necessary.

Then, in October 2025, Toyota and Lexus recalled approximately 1.025 million vehicles in the US over another software-related problem – this time involving the rear-view camera.

And in January this year, around 162,000 Toyota Tundra and Tundra Hybrid vehicles were recalled in the US after their multimedia displays could freeze on a camera view or go black under certain circumstances.

The latest recall has sparked a debate among Toyota owners and enthusiasts on Reddit, with many questioning whether increasingly sophisticated digital dashboards are actually an improvement over traditional analogue instruments.

One highly upvoted commenter said they had ‘a hell of a lot more confidence’ in an analogue gauge cluster lasting for decades than a modern digital display.

Another argued that digital dashboards are not necessarily less reliable, pointing out that digital odometers have been used for decades.

Toyota says owners of affected vehicles will be contacted and instructed to take their cars to an authorized dealer for the free software update.

Until the repair is available, owners can check their vehicle identification number through Toyota’s recall system or the NHTSA’s recall database to confirm whether their vehicle is affected. Toyota’s US customer support line is 1-800-331-4331.
