A tragic four-vehicle collision that occurred Sunday night near a New Jersey elementary school resulted in two fatalities, prompting a North Jersey school district to delay Monday’s classes, officials reported.
The incident unfolded around 8:30 p.m. outside Haskell Elementary School in Wanaque, as detailed by WPIX. The local fire chief confirmed that two individuals and a dog lost their lives in the crash.
Images from the crash site depicted four vehicles severely damaged and a pet carrier crushed at the back of one sedan.
Details remain scarce from the police regarding the accident, which took place on Ringwood Avenue, located approximately 25 miles from Central Park.
Despite the crash occurring late Sunday, its severity necessitated overnight investigation efforts, continuing into the morning to clear the scene, as reported by WCBS. The location directly in front of Haskell Elementary led to a 90-minute delayed start for the entire Wanaque School District on Monday.
In a Facebook post, Wanaque police advised, “Anticipate delays for the morning commute,” urging anyone with information about the accident to reach out to them at 973-835-5600 due to the gravity of the incident.
School officials thought of canceling classes district-wide if the scene was not cleared in the morning, WPIX reported. Instead, the school day began at 10:15 a.m.
