A former Miss Universe contestant tragically died in a freak accident when an elk smashed through the windshield of her luxury Porsche.

Kseniya Alexandrova, 30, was initially placed in a coma with critical brain injuries after the accident with her husband in Tver Oblast, Russia, on July 5.

The model’s husband survived the crash, while she remained in hospital for over a month until she died on Friday.

Her husband, who was behind the wheel of the supercar when the elk suddenly appeared, explained that he didn’t have enough time to avoid hitting the animal.

‘From the moment it jumped out to the impact, a split second passed. I didn’t have time to do anything,’ he told Russian outlet RIA

‘The elk flew into the car. The blow hit Ksyusha in the head. She was unconscious, her head was broken, everything was covered in blood.’

He mentioned that they were driving at a low speed and were wearing seatbelts, but the design of their car caused it to hit the elk’s legs, preventing the airbags from deploying.

Grieving, he shared that they had been married for just four months before the tragic incident, and noted that his wife had shown signs of recovery while in a coma before she sadly passed away.

The model had participated in the 2017 Miss Universe pageant and was a well-known model in her native Russia.

Alexandrova’s husband said his wife was directly hit as the elk went through their windshield, saying the ‘blow hit Ksenia in the head.’

‘She was unconscious, her head was severely injured, and there was blood everywhere. The most alarming part was that her frontal skull bones were fractured, resulting in an open head injury,’ he recounted.

He said a passerby stopped and called for an ambulance, which arrived within 15 minutes and raced the Miss Universe contestant to hospital in Rzhev.

Doctors decided she had to be transported to Moscow for more intensive treatment, and revealed that she briefly regained consciousness at Sklifosovsky Research Institute of Emergency Medicine.

‘At first, they did not do a second operation. She could not speak because she was on a ventilator, but she was absolutely conscious,’ he said.

Alexandrova's husband said that they were driving slowly at the time of the crash and were wearing seatbelts, but the low front of their $100,000 Porsche Panamera (seen in a stock image) meant it collided with the legs of the elk and the airbags did not deploy

He said medics then carried out a second operation, and although it was initially believed to be successful, she then ‘suddenly plunged back into a coma.’

‘Meningitis was diagnosed, which turned into more severe inflammatory brain diseases. The tests began to deteriorate, it came to blood sepsis,’ he continued.

‘Once they were able to start the heart… But the next day Ksenia died – it was not possible to restart the heart.’

Tributes poured in for the model following her sudden death, with the Miss Universe pageant extending its ‘deepest and most heartfelt condolences’ to her family.

‘Her grace, beauty, and spirit left an unforgettable mark on the Miss Universe family and beyond,’ they wrote.

‘May her memory continue to inspire kindness, strength, and love in all those who were fortunate enough to know her.’
