A chilling case has emerged from New York, where a man is facing accusations of murdering his estranged wife and injuring a teenager in a failed murder-suicide attempt. The incident has left a community in shock and mourning.

Authorities allege that Marcos Leal, aged 57, engaged in a volatile confrontation with his estranged wife, Adriana Barbosa, 46, at their home in Farmingville. The argument escalated dramatically, culminating in Leal fatally stabbing Barbosa on Thursday evening, shortly after 8:15 pm.

During the violent episode, a teenager present in the home also suffered injuries. The identity of the teenager remains undisclosed, adding an element of mystery and concern over their connection to the couple. Following the attack, Leal reportedly attempted to take his own life by turning the knife on himself, according to police statements.

When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they discovered a harrowing tableau: both Barbosa and Leal were suffering from stab wounds, alongside the injured teenage relative. The New York Post documented that the police were quickly on the scene to manage the situation.

Barbosa was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where medical professionals pronounced her dead, marking a tragic end to the night’s events.

The teenager was also taken to a hospital and fortunately received treatment for injuries deemed non-life-threatening. Meanwhile, Leal was hospitalized and treated for his serious self-inflicted injuries. The community now watches closely as the legal processes unfold, seeking justice and healing from this devastating incident.

He is now facing charges of second-degree murder, criminal contempt and endangering the welfare of a child, and is scheduled to be arraigned at a future date once he is released from the hospital.

It remains unclear what sparked the deadly confrontation, and police did not clarify how the teenager is related to the couple or the circumstances surrounding the criminal contempt charge.

Leal and Barbosa became engaged in 2015 and were married one year later, according to Greater Long Island.

Barbosa had been divorced from a different man in 2012. 

One of the family’s neighbors told ABC 7 New York they were a kind family – a mother and father with children and a dog.

The neighbor, Benvinda Viera, then went on to share how she was ‘very, very, very shocked’ by the tragedy.

‘I never have problems with him, very nice people,’ she said. 

Another neighbor, Dr. Richard Dark, also told Newsday he only interacted with the family once, when they lost their dog about a year ago and neighbors tried to help find him. 

‘I don’t know their situation, if they ever reached out or something like that,’ he told ABC 7. ‘But there are avenues people can go to before it gets to that stage.’

An investigation into the fatal stabbing is ongoing.

In the meantime, an online fundraiser has netted over $20,600 to support the family and provide for Barbosa’s funeral expenses.

A description for the fundraiser said Barbosa was a ‘loving mother, daughter, sister and friend – a light in the lives of all who knew her.

‘Her kindness was natural, her laughter contagious and her strength inspiring,’ the GoFundMe reads.

‘She had a heart big enough to embrace everyone’s pain and carried herself with grace even in life’s most difficult storms.

‘She loved deeply, gave generously and always put others first. To know her was to feel safe, valued and understood.’

The fundraiser then goes on to say that Barbosa’s sudden passing ‘has left her family and friends in profound sorrow.

‘No words can capture the pain of losing someone so precious in such a violent and senseless way,’ it reads.

‘Let us honor the life of our sister Adriana, not for how it ended, but for the beauty, strength and compassion she brought to this world. Her memory will live forever in our hearts.’
