Boy, 11, shot dead in horror road rage attack on way to school

In a tragic turn of events on Friday morning, an 11-year-old boy was fatally shot during what authorities have described as a road-rage incident, while he was en route to school with his family.

The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. on the outskirts of Las Vegas, more specifically in Henderson, Nevada. The boy was traveling in an SUV driven by his stepfather when the situation escalated.

According to Henderson police, the suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Matthew Johns, allegedly fired the shot that claimed the young boy’s life. The confrontation reportedly arose from both vehicles aggressively attempting to overtake each other on a crowded freeway.

Henderson Police Chief Reggie Rader emphasized the senseless nature of the tragedy, stating, “We lost a life today that we didn’t have to lose. An 11-year-old was on his way to school, and this senseless act took his life.”

Authorities noted that the conflict between the two vehicles included a verbal exchange, during which both parties rolled down their windows, leading to the fatal shooting.

Police said both cars got into a verbal exchange and rolled their respective windows down.

At that point, Johns allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired into the back seat of the other vehicle, killing the sitting boy.

Henderson police chief Reggie Rader said the ‘senseless act’ was avoidable and urged locals to ‘do better’ because ‘we can’t allow this to continue to happen’

Rader said: ‘I would rather you be stuck in traffic and late for your destination than have to go to a funeral for a loved one, or potentially spend the rest of your life in prison.

‘We have to do better as a city, we have to do better as a community. We have to do better as human beings, because we can’t allow this to continue to happen.’

The stepfather then ‘rammed’ John’s four–door sedan, bringing both of their cars to a halt in the middle of the road and prompting another ‘heated exchange.’

This second dispute was spotted by a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer who was driving on the freeway, police said.

The police officer arrested Johns at the scene of the crime. His gun was also recovered.

Johns was charged with open murder, discharging a gun at or into a vehicle and discharging a gun within a vehicle in a prohibited area, police records showed.

The child was treated by the Henderson Fire Department and then rushed to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, where he died.

Rader said: ‘Our roadways can get congested and we’re doing improvement projects to try to ease that burden, but what I need is everybody to have an appreciation for the sanctity of life.’

He added: ‘My ask, my plea of the community – especially as we enter these holiday seasons – is to slow down.

‘You will eventually get there and let’s get there safely.’

Police said Johns was the only person in his car and that there was no information that ‘any impairment played a factor’ in the fatal shooting.

Johns was booked into jail Friday, records showed.

He appeared virtually in court on Saturday morning and was denied bail, according to KLAS

The Daily Mail reached out to the Henderson Police Department for further comment.
