Four individuals lost their lives and at least 20 sustained injuries, four critically, when gunfire erupted during a large event at a well-known bar-restaurant on South Carolina’s St. Helena Island early Sunday, according to authorities.
The incident occurred just before 1 a.m. at Willie’s Bar and Grill on the island, which is renowned for its historic landmarks, scenic coastal views, and family-owned shops and eateries. Beaufort County sheriff’s office deputies answered “multiple reports” of gunshots and discovered “a large crowd of people, several suffering from gunshot wounds,” as per the sheriff’s office’s statement. Witnesses reported that the gathering included hundreds of people.
“Several victims and eyewitnesses sought refuge in nearby businesses and properties to escape the gunshots,” and many were transported to hospitals, the office stated. “Subsequently, more victims arrived at area hospitals for medical care due to injuries suffered at the site.”
Four fatalities were confirmed at the location, with four more hospitalized in critical condition. Overall, 20 individuals were injured, though not all by gunfire. Authorities withheld the victims’ names until kin could be notified and indicated the sheriff’s office is focusing on several persons of interest.
“I heard a lot of shots,” recounted Henry Wright, a cook at the restaurant, to The Island Packet. He stated the shooting occurred outside the bar, prompting everyone inside to flee through the back. Of the deceased, one was near the front steps, two were on the ground in front of the bar, and the fourth was near a tree on the premises, according to Wright. He also mentioned that one appeared to be a teenage girl.

“This is a tragic and difficult incident for everyone,” the sheriff’s office stated. “We ask for your patience as we continue our investigation. Our thoughts are with all of the victims and their families.”
Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) declared herself “completely heartbroken” over the “devastating shooting” in a post on X. “Our prayers are with the victims, their families and everyone impacted by this horrific act of violence.”
This was the latest in a wave of recent, unrelated shootings, including two in Mississippi in which a total of eight people were killed Saturday during high school homecoming weekends in Heidelberg and Leland.
Less than a month ago, a gunman on a boat cruised past a popular waterfront spot, the American Fish Company in historic Southport, N.C., opened fire, killing three and injuring five.
