Australian diver killed by shark in third fatal attack in three weeks

A tragic incident unfolded off Western Australia’s coast as a man lost his life following a shark attack while fishing, according to police reports on Saturday. This marks the third deadly shark encounter in Australia within a span of three weeks.

The victim, aged 35, was engaged in spearfishing with his family when the attack occurred on Saturday morning near Michaelmas Island, situated close to Albany, approximately 241 miles from Perth, the state’s capital.

Despite efforts from paramedics to save him after he was brought ashore, he succumbed to his injuries.

On the same day, authorities reported a sighting of a 14.8-foot shark of undetermined species near Michaelmas Island, a secluded nature reserve rarely visited by tourists.

Earlier on May 24, a 39-year-old man tragically lost his life in a shark attack while fishing at the Great Barrier Reef.

This incident followed the death of a 38-year-old man who was fatally wounded in a shark attack off an island near Perth just 10 days prior.

There are around 20 shark attacks in Australia every year but the vast majority are not fatal, according to data from conservation groups.

Far more people drown on the country’s beaches.
