Travis Kelce addresses possible retirement as Chiefs lose to Raiders

Following the Kansas City Chiefs’ unexpected loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, Travis Kelce finds himself at a crossroads, contemplating retirement from the NFL. The Chiefs’ season concluded with a 14-12 defeat, marking the first time since 2014 that the formidable Super Bowl contenders failed to secure a playoff spot under coach Andy Reid.

Recent speculation has swirled around the possibility of Kelce stepping away from professional football after 13 illustrious seasons, a decision that seems all the more poignant following Sunday’s crushing loss. If he chooses to retire, this defeat could cast a shadow over an otherwise remarkable career.

As Kelce headed back to the locker room after the game, he appeared visibly deflated, a reflection of the weight of the decision looming over him. His demeanor hinted at the significant contemplation he faces regarding his future in the sport.

When probed about his decision-making timeline, Kelce expressed deep affection for his team. “First things first, I just love this team. I’m proud of the way we finished this, even though it ended the way it did,” he stated. “Guys still showed up. Gave it their all and that’s all you can ask for, man. I’ve got so much love for this team, this organization, and the people here so I’ll spend some time with them, go through exit meetings tomorrow, get close to the family and figure things out,” he added.

As the Chiefs and their fans wait with bated breath, Kelce’s decision will undoubtedly have a profound impact on the team’s future and his legacy within the sport.

‘Who knows? Either it hits me quick or I’ve got to take some time. Last year was a little bit easier. I think I knew right away I wanted to give this one a shot. I don’t know. We’ll see.’

Asked if he felt he achieved what he wanted to when he decided to return this season, Kelce replied: ‘Obviously we didn’t do as well as a team but I feel like I came into the season prepared and ready to rock and roll with the right intentions.

‘The ball just didn’t go our way in a lot of those close games unfortunately and I think if I do choose to come back that’s something I’ve really got to focus on, making sure I’m available and ready for those moments.’

Without the injured Patrick Mahomes at quarterback, the Chiefs failed to score a touchdown and put up just 168 yards of total offense. Instead, all 12 of their points came from the boot of kicker Harrison Butker.

But despite the loss in Sin City, it was still a good day for Kelce personally as he made more NFL history. He became just the third tight end in NFL history to reach 13,000 career receiving yards, finishing with 12 off three receptions and six targets.

It remains unclear whether Swift attended the game but there footage or pictures of her at Allegiant Stadium are yet to surface and she has been much more low key at stadiums this season.

She also hasn’t been to a road game since the Chiefs won in the playoffs at the Buffalo Bills in January 2024 so it was suggested that if she made the trip for a dead rubber game in Las Vegas, it would surely only be because Kelce was retiring.

Kelce has spent his entire career with the Chiefs after being drafted in 2013, winning three Super Bowls and establishing himself as one of the best tight ends in the history of the game.

He has enjoyed an impressive individual season with 851 yards to his name and five touchdowns, even while the Chiefs have imploded and failed to make the playoffs.

It is unclear whether Swift was at the game but many thought she would be if he was retiring

But the 36-year-old’s Chiefs contract expires at the end of the season and many believe he won’t be signing a new one.

Instead, many expect he will use that as the time to bring the curtain down on his career and ride off into the sunset with Swift.

The pair are reportedly set to tie the knot on June 13 at the luxurious Ocean House in Rhode Island, close to Swift’s property in the north-east of America.

Kelce has kept his cards close to his chest about what the future holds, insisting he will reach a decision once the season is over and he has had time to hold talks with Chiefs, as well as his friends and family.

But he has said before that he won’t play for any other team in the NFL than the Chiefs.

Kelce looked on the brink of retiring after the Chiefs lost the Super Bowl to Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans back in February but ultimately decided he didn’t want to quit the game on such a low note.

In an emotionally-charged interview with fellow franchise legend Tony Gonzalez on Christmas Day, Kelce spoke out on the retirement rumors.

‘I think I’m still searching for those answers,’ Kelce said when pressed on his looming decision.

‘Obviously the way this one ended with a sour taste in my mouth. I feel motivated but I’ve got to make the right decision for myself.’

However, the three-time Super Bowl winner didn’t fully close the door on the possibility of returning for one more season.

‘Just the fact that when I know it’s over, it’s over,’ he added when Gonzalez questioned what he would be returning for.

‘I still have a lot of love for this game. If I came back it would be just to answer that flame in my heart for this thing.’
