Trump heading to Kentucky to rally supporters ahead of midterms

President Donald Trump is traveling to Kentucky on Saturday to energize his supporters and rally behind Republicans confronting unexpectedly tight contests, including a House race that could further endanger the GOP’s hold on the chamber.

Trump will appear in Highland Heights, Northern Kentucky, just across the Ohio River from a key battleground. In Ohio, former Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown is seeking to reclaim his old seat from Republican Sen. Jon Husted, who was appointed to serve out the vacancy created when JD Vance became vice president.

The president has made four trips to Ohio during his current term, including two visits this month. During one of them, he joked about inspecting Husted’s backside, underscoring the state’s significance as Republicans work to protect their 53-47 Senate majority and a narrow 218-214 advantage in the House.

The Ohio Senate contest is rated a pure tossup by the Cook Political Report, despite Trump carrying the state over former Vice President Kamala Harris by a 55-44 margin in 2024.

Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear, who is viewed as a possible 2028 presidential contender, said Trump’s decision to campaign in a state he won decisively reflects concern within Republican ranks.

“I don’t take any vote for granted,” Beshear told reporters this week. But he added that the president’s appearance in a state he won by 31 points suggests Republicans are “in big trouble” if Trump believes he needs to campaign there ahead of the midterm election. Beshear slightly overstated Trump’s 30-point victory in 2016.

Trump’s rally will also reach Ohio television markets and allow him to signal his support for congressional candidate Ed Gallrein, whom he helped advance through the primary after turning against the incumbent, according to University of Kentucky political scientist Stephen Voss.

The visit will also place Trump within striking distance of another Kentucky district where Republicans are facing a more competitive race, Voss said.

Rep. Andy Barr, a Republican, is running for Senate in an effort to succeed Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell. He faces Democratic state Rep. Charles Booker.

A Global Strategy Group poll released by Booker’s campaign on Sept. 9 showed Barr ahead 49%-40%, with a 4-point margin of error. McConnell, 84, has sometimes clashed with Trump, even as he helped confirm the president’s judicial nominees and dealt with significant health problems.

Barr’s Senate campaign has left an open House seat in the Lexington region, roughly a 90-minute drive from Trump’s rally site. Democrat Zach Dembo, a former Navy JAG officer who resigned as a federal prosecutor in the Trump Justice Department, is challenging Republican Ralph Alvarado, a former state health commissioner.

The Cook Political Report on Oct. 9 shifted the district from “safe Republican” to “leans Republican,” signaling a more competitive race.

Republicans remain favored in Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District, where Trump helped defeat Rep. Thomas Massie in the primary after labeling him a “nutjob.” Ed Gallrein, a retired Navy SEAL who won that primary, is now facing Democratic businesswoman Melissa Strange. Gallrein holds the advantage, though frustration among younger voters and independents could depress turnout.

“Every once in a while you see a case where the electorate is angered so much that they sit on their hands,” Voss said.

Political analysts say ongoing inflation, the war in Iran and elevated fuel prices are making races more competitive nationwide, including in traditionally Republican territory.

Trump’s Kentucky appearance comes after visits this week to Alaska, Montana and Georgia.
