Trump vows to pass 'The Great Healthcare plan' cracking down on insurance companies

DALLAS — President Trump is expected to use his address at the GOP midterm convention to promote what he is calling “the Great Healthcare plan,” a proposal that includes a tougher line on health insurance companies, according to prepared remarks.

The president’s timeline for moving “the Great Healthcare plan” through Congress remains unclear. But Trump is also set to preview efforts to lock in his prescription drug price policies and renew his pledge to eliminate surprise medical bills.

“We will pass the Great Healthcare plan to stop all government payments to big insurance companies, and give the money directly to the people, for you to buy your own healthcare and have money left over,” Trump plans to say, according to a copy of the speech obtained by The Post.

The idea echoes a debate among Republicans last year, when enhanced Obamacare subsidies were nearing expiration and GOP lawmakers weighed several possible alternatives. Trump had shown interest in redirecting subsidy money straight to consumers instead of routing it through insurance providers.

Specifics about Trump’s “Great Healthcare plan” remain limited. Republicans previously tried to pass sweeping healthcare reform during his first term in the White House.

Trump is also expected to highlight several other healthcare priorities and policy goals during the convention speech.

“We will end surprise medical billing, and require insurers and hospitals to post all prices clearly in plain English,” the president is expected to vow.

“We will make our Most Favored Nation Agreements on prescription drug prices permanent, which reduces your prescription drug prices by 90%.”
