San Diego police were looking for two men — one carrying a gun — who used a chain attached to a vehicle to try rip an ATM out of a convenience store in Clairemont early Wednesday, authorities said.

The pair attempted to steal the cash machine from a convenience store on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard near Lakehurst Avenue around 4:15 a.m., said police Officer Sarah Foster.

They backed a vehicle up to the business, put a chain around the ATM and attempted to yank it out. When they were unable to remove the machine, they drove off, she said.

One of the men was armed with a gun, Foster said.

OnScene TV reported that one of the men held an employee at gunpoint as the other put the chain on the ATM.

Police did not release a detailed description of the suspects or the vehicle.
